I’ve always wanted to be a cop because people in my family was one. Ever since my step-uncle came into my family after my dad got married, I’ve wanted to be one because he’s one. My dad was a firefighter but I really don’t like stuff like that. When I grow up and I get this job, I will be very grateful because this is my dream job. Cops usually get about $56 to $60 thousand dollars a year. There's also a lot of range depending on how long a cop has been on the job. Members of the NYPD are paid $46,288 during their first year on the force. But the pay jumps every year or half-year, reaching $90,829 at the five-and-half year point. In some areas, you can go through basic law enforcement training at the local community college or other state-sponsored institution first and then apply to the agency of your choice. Other jurisdictions may require you to complete their in-house training program after successful completion of their hiring process or sponsor you to attend an academy elsewhere. Still others may accept your external academy certificate but also require completion of an abbreviated version of their academy.
