IPIP NEO Assessment
Initially, taking the IPIP NEO assessment felt like taking any other assessment. I have taken several different forms of assessments in the past, ranging from non-standardized assessments taken due to simply being curious by the results, to standardized assessments that were used in other classes prior to this one. However, I have never taken an assessment consisting of 120 items, so I realized from the outset that the assessment had differences from the others, if only in the amount of items. As I took the IPIP NEO, I found that many of the items found in the first 60 questions were also found in the last 60, with the only exception being a slight word order difference in the items. The notion that assessments are a tool to be used by counselors is an important point, as assessments are only a possible reflection of certain aspects of an individual’s personality traits. The instructor mentioned in the preceding notes before taking the IPIP NEO that assessment results are not suggestions of what a person is or may be, but the results are those that are compared to other assessment taker results. For example, scoring high in a certain category, such as neuroticism, does not mean that a client is neurotic, it simply indicates that the client scored higher than the average participants in the assessment. This means that a counselor should not take the assessment results at face value without first finding out more about a person via actually communicating with the client. However, a standardized assessment can be an excellent tool in helping counselors detect certain characteristics about a person, often in a time convenient way. It is also essential that standardized procedures be used, so that no biases can skew the data. Additionally, I believe that assessments that take into account multicultural differences in individuals are vital. After taking this assessment I realize that computerized results should only be used as a very important tool in appraising someone, but that the results should never take the place of actual interactions with the client in
