The notion that assessments are a tool to be used by counselors is an important point, as assessments are only a possible reflection of certain aspects of an individual’s personality traits. The instructor mentioned in the preceding notes before taking the IPIP NEO that assessment results are not suggestions of what a person is or may be, but the results are those that are compared to other assessment taker results. For example, scoring high in a certain category, such as neuroticism, does not mean that a client is neurotic, it simply indicates that the client scored higher than the average participants in the assessment. This means that a counselor should not take the assessment results at face value without first finding out more about a person via actually communicating with the client. However, a standardized assessment can be an excellent tool in helping counselors detect certain characteristics about a person, often in a time convenient way.
