IS-3120 Unit 2 Assignment 2
Evolution of Ethernet
With the advancement information technologies such as multi-core processors, digital media and mega storage architectures, increased Ethernet capacities will continue to be developed. It is likely that approximately every five to seven years will produce new standards to meet new technologies in Ethernet capacities. We can expect to see a greater push towards unified networking with an increasing emphasis on increased data storage at lower costs. New standards will be developed and evolve as the technologies continue to expand.
Because switches talk to each other and also because most Cisco switches have VLAN enabled, they are required for configuring a VLAN-enabled Ethernet network. A router could not create the broadcast domain required for a VLAN. You can configure all ports on a switch to serve a single VLAN or multiple VLANs, depending on the VLAN topology design. …show more content…
With increasing data types such as voice, video and data storage, the demand for increased transmission speeds will be boundless. If past trends are any indication then we can expect to see Ethernet architectures reaching into Petabytes within the next thirty years or so.
For the organization wanting to implement a medical imagery repository, requiring 100 Mbps connectivity for eight work stations, I would recommend IEEE 802.3u 100BaseTX as a minimum. 100BaseTX transmits network data at speeds up to 100Mbps which is what most local area networks use. 100BaseTX supports full-duplex operation. The eight workstations should never have a problem with bandwidth while operating at the same
