IT Project Failure Paper

Why do so many IT Projects fail in the US? Project teams fail to deliver IT projects due to having limited knowledge on the technology, which inhibits proper project planning. Technical incompetence plus a lack of user input, leads to inadequate project requirements and specifications. Additionally, by not providing the right training or hiring project teams with the right experience, failure rates of projects will continue to be high. As such, the research of this paper will provide a comprehensive assessment of failures, as well as possible solutions to reduce the rate of failure.
Background
It is well understood that project management has benefited organizations throughout history in developing and implementing objectives to serve as a solution.
• Technology projects planned and executed versus projects that never got off the ground.
Approach
The approach to this paper will be an analysis based on literature review. Data analysis will be completed post-mortem through a mixed research approach. Both inductive and deductive analysis will be completed to develop correlations between IT project failures and causes. Information gathered will come from a variety of sources, researched through university libraries and search engines, such as:
• Scholarly sources – Due to the level of credibility and authority in these sources, it is important to utilize this information to improve the quality of the research. This source will include peer reviewed articles, case studies and other research studies which are designed and structured to provide the necessary elements required to validate this papers position.
• Articles – Articles from industry leaders such as PMI, CIO or peer reviewed journal articles from Universities across the US are well established, reliable resources.
