In October 26th, 2012 it was announced that Lil Wayne was hospitalized for dehydration and migraine, after spending several hours being treated with IV fluids, the singer was released. The initial goal of this medical procedure is to restore intravascular volume. The simplest approach is to replace dehydration losses with 0.9% saline. This ensures that the administered fluid remains in the extracellular compartment, where it will support blood pressure and peripheral perfusion (Alok Kalia par. 1). The article, “The History of Saline Solution in Modern Medicine,” reports, "Saline use first appeared during the 1831 Blue cholera epidemic in Europe. Experimentation was first attempted to treat those suffering from severe dehydration” (par. 2). Based on the early use of saline solution, beginning in the XIV century in Europe, it is evident that this therapy has been shown to be effected for many years and continues to be useful in today’s modern practices. Intravenous (IV) therapy involves the administration of a therapeutic solution directly into a vein (“Intravenous Therapy” par. 1). The term intravenous therapy begins with the understanding of each word, intravenous simply means "within a vein", and therapy is known as a treatment intended to relieve symptoms; therefore, intravenous therapy may be used to deliver medication directly into the bloodstream. The article, “Intravenous Therapy; IV Statistics,” states, “Of all hospitalized patients, 85% have some type of IV therapy” (par. 1). When one speaks statistically of intravenous therapy, it shows that is commonly used in more than half of the patients that are admitted into any hospital, showing the importance of this therapy in patient’s life. In intravenous therapy, installation of a large amount of fluid and/or electrolytes, or nutrient substances into a vein is implemented, and if in not performed correctly, complications may appear.…
