Othello trust Iago. ‘Honest Iago’ and Iago uses this to advantage. Iago hates Othello because he believes that Othello has been Cuckolding his wife, Iago has no proof but he believes his suspicion is enough to act on ‘I follow him to serve my turn upon him.’ Iago went behind Othello’s back and went to tell Brabantio that his daughter has eloped with Othello who he describes to be a breeding Stallion “you’ll have your daughter covered with a Barbary/ horse.” Iago is also not happy with Othello having chosen Casio who he claims is gay to be second in command “A fellow almost damned in a fair wife-” Casio has not been to war and has no practical knowledge so he doesn’t believe Casio deserves his position. …show more content…
Iago is prejudice and discriminatory towards women and black people.
“Or else the devil will make a grandsire of you.” In this he talks about Othello will having a baby with Desdemona, he refers to Othello as the devil applying that black people are evil and that Othello having a child with Desdemona is a bad thing. He dehumanizes Othello throughout the play mostly portraying him as half human and half horse “Lead to the Sagittary” and also refers to him as the moor “To the gross clasps of a lascivious
Moor-”.
Iago uses Roderigo’s naive and gullible personality to his advantage. Iago sees Roderigo as his purse ‘Thus do I ever make my fool my purse,’ Iago made Roderigo believe that the jewels he was given were taken to Desdemona. He knows Roderigo is hopelessly in love with Desdemona so he sees this as an opportunity. When Roderigo brings up how he’s upset about how Iago let Othello marry Desdemona, Iago immediately changes the topic of the conversation from Othello marrying Desdemona to how much he hates Othello because he was not made second in command.
In Act 1 Iago is very much like the devil. He is a jealous person, he is obsessed with money and power and he also believes in revenge. Iago’s first line in the play is “’Sblood” which is blasphemy, Iago uses blasphemy throughout Act 1 which in the Venezuelan renaissance was very rare unless you were a vile person. Iago pervert’s Christian principals throughout the act which makes him the explicit example of an evil man.
