I could feel from day one that a fast-flowing river of anxiety had gushed over my head. Standardized test such as the SAT’s, ACT’s, and AP exams, college pressure, the endless speeches from my teachers and principals about the importance of academics and career searching was now added to my agenda. Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, and my stress level continued to grow. I became extremely engrossed and focused on my school work, and it consumed my time to a point where my parents became very concerned for my health. I was staying up late studying and finishing my homework for the next day, sometimes into the early hour of the morning because I would work ahead in classes before finishing my essential studies for the next day. I found myself on several occasions starting to fall asleep in my second period physics class because I had not gotten a good night’s sleep. There were some nights where I would not even see my dad…

Things that I have learned so far about high school is that the more you will realize who your friends are they will really start showing you their “true colors”. Furthermore balancing the workload is a very hard task because you have extra curriculum and other responsibilities dealing with your household. Being in high school you aren't going to get pampered or a teacher constantly coming to you, tell you that you have work due , missing assignments , being in class on time and keeping up with your grades . Also , I have learned that you shouldn't wait unit the last minute to turn work in or ask for extra credit , most certainty you shouldn't wait until the day before the due date to turn in your assignments . By having other classes that will be due…

This affected me not only academically but socially and athletically. The stress of the work isolated me from my peers and this caused them to complain to me in which I was pressured to work extra hard to complete my studies to make time for them. In addition to the weight of trying to pass and maintain a social life, I had to go to extensive hours of after school practices for my school’s water polo team. As part of the team, they relied on me to play my part and it made me feel burdened to practice harder to make up for my lack of good grades. Because of my naivety on how to balance a high school life, my anxiety was beginning to build. The next semester the pace got faster and the workload doubled. I was horrified with myself that I couldn’t catch up. I found all my classmates around me struggling as well but it felt like I got the brunt of it. It came to a point—my tipping point—when I was depressed and at that moment, I gave up. I thought, “If I can’t even pick up my grade then there’s no point in trying.” By then, it was rounding the end of the school year. My parents were breathing down my neck and treated me harshly to get my grades up but I…
