Ibogaine
The war on drugs is becoming increasingly difficult to fight year after year. I would agree that most drugs are harmful to one’s wellbeing and should be prohibited and taken off the market. What if there was a drug that was used for spiritual purpose and could also help one with an addiction to alcohol and even harmful opiates such as heroin and cocaine. The drug Ibogain is exceptionally controversial; “Ibogaine is a natural alkaloid extract from the root bark of the African shrug Tabernanthe Iboga” (4). Since Ibogaine is still a drug, it still has negative effects on the body such as “visual distortion, visual and auditory hallucinations, ataxia (temporary loss of the ability to coordinate muscular movement), nausea, and mild tremor” (5). According to MAP’S research on the long term effects of Ibogaine, the morality rate is 1 out of 300. Those deaths are also attributed with prior liver disease, or in combination with other drugs. (2). With Ibogaine the treatment possibilities are endless especially since “Ibogaine has been found to be effective in dealing with psychological trauma…”(3). While the user experiences influence under Ibogaine, they experience a three day introspective power trip. The power trip is broken into phases, the first phase being the most intense. In this phase the user is able to recollect long-term memories. As for drug addicts using Ibogaine, with in the three day period they are able to identify the root of their addiction (4). The next two phases the user sees his or herself in a out of body prospective. Ibogaine is not a threat to the body and should not be treated as one.
