Icabod Crane Character Analysis
In a little valley located among the high hills in Upstate New York is one of the quietest places in the entire world, Sleepy Hollow. In this quiet town lives a man by the Name of
Ichabod Crane. In the legend of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving uses physical descriptions, actions and interactions to foreshadow the tragic ending of the lovestruck and superficial
Ichabod.

Ichabod Crane is vividly described as a ridiculous and dorky man who happens to be in love for shallow reasons. His physical appearance is that he is very tall and skinny, with very long arms and legs, over sized feet, to the point that he is disproportionate in size. His head is small and he has huge ears, large eyes, and a gigantic nose. He looks like a scarecrow. The girl he is in love is a beautiful and wealthy girl named Katrina Van Tassel. she is described as “a blooming lass of fresh 18; plump as a partridge; ripe and melting and rosycheeked as one of her father’s peaches, and universally famed, not merely for her beauty, but her vast expectations. She was withal a little of a coquette”. His shallowness is revealed when it says that “His heart yearned for the damsel who was to inherit these domains, and his imagination expanded witht the idea, how they might be readily turned into cash”. His main intentions for liking her are merely for her father’s land that he owns and how much money he shall gain if he becomes a part of that family. Also, Irving shows how Ichabod’s actions and interactions are affected by his motives.

The plot in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” builds much faster that the plot in “The Raven.” The narrator speaks of becoming tired and beginning to doze however being wakened by a noise that he feels is a faint knock. One of the reasons that Irving’s story is better than “The Raven,” is the extended time taken for the action to build in the plot. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” is favored by most readers because it is a tale of good vs. evil. The story sparks the imagination of the reader. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” is story of rivalry between the two main characters, Ichabod Crane and Brom Van Brunt. The story represents the struggle and triumph of a young America. Irving does well at building the story between the two characters seeking to win the love of a rich beautiful woman Katrina. “The Raven,” focuses more on the distress of young man suffering from the loss of his love and dealing with the emotions that follow. I did not enjoy researching the definitions of the symbols and words in the poem. I began to feel sorrow for the narrator, as he fell deeper and deeper into sorrow. He spent time trying to forget Lenore by reading books of to distract his mind. His attempts to forget were in vain.…

Irving's Ichabod develops a cowardice persona from the audience as his superstitious beliefs come from unproven stories, in comparison to Burton's Ichabod, the audience is position to favor the character as his fears originate from his sympathetic past in which he is trying to forget. The original Ichabod is a school teacher who is constantly reading supernatural books and stories and due to his credulity, he superstitiously believes everything he is told: "Cotton Mather's 'History of New England Witchcraft,' in which, by the way, he most firmly and potently believed." (Moses and Irving, 1995) Due to his constant fears, his gullible belief in the Headless Horseman causes him to flee Tarry Town in which emanates his cowardice - causing the audience to view him as the coward he is within the text. However within the film, Ichabod is presented as an investigator similar to Sherlock Holmes in which many modern audiences' love. Rather than credulity, Ichabod is interested in scientific causes, and justice, "by pathology,... I will need to examine the body." (Sleepy Hollow, 1999) His vast collection of self invented equipment and notebooks further support his portrayal as more scientific than naive. His fears originate from his past as Ichabod is often haunted by flashbacks of his father and memories of his mother: "By a Bible-Black tyrant behind a mask of righteousness. I was seven when lost my faith." (Sleepy Hollow, 1999), therefore, eliciting sympathy from the audience. Similar scenes occur in both the text and film. Within the text, Ichabod's disappearance is caused by the pursuit of the Headless Horseman, evidently revealed to be Brom Bones: "Brom Bones,... was observed to look exceedingly knowing whenever the story of…

“If I can but reach that bridge,” thought Ichabod, “I am safe.” The church bridge was rickety looking, but was the only way to safety. Ichabod could feel the hot breath of the black steed cutting close behind him. Petrified, he convulsively kicked in the ribs of old Gunpowder and they took off like lightening towards the bridge. Ichabod had cast a look behind him to see if his followers had vanished. Just then, the goblin rider had a pumpkin with fire on top of his head as though it was his own. Ichabod raced inside the bridge, eager to get out of this awful vicinity.…

Frankenstein’s monster is most frequently seen as, of course, a monster. He is fearsome naturally, but he has the mind and spirit of a developing human child. The creature’s youthful demeanor exhibits itself through many examples. The most prevalent childish behaviors he has are; the creature’s fear of being alone and seeking attention and love, being completely unbiased and not judgmental at the dawn of his creation, and his lack of knowledge of the world around him.…

The theme of superficial love is firstly discussed through Romeo’s unreciprocated affections for Rosaline. After being approached by Benvolio to find out the cause of his grievances, Romeo reveals that ‘(he does) love a woman’ but ‘she will not stay the siege of loving terms’ and reciprocate his feelings for her. ‘With tears augmenting the fresh morning’s dew’, Romeo mopes over Rosaline’s decline of his romantic advances towards her for she ‘hath forsworn to love’. He only emphasizes on her physical attractiveness through the repetition of the word ‘beauty’ but does not delve further to appreciate Rosaline as a person. Romeo harbours a superficial infatuation for Rosaline because ‘she is rich in beauty’ and thus fancies only her physical appearances, but is insincere in getting to know Rosaline despite proclaiming his ‘love’ for her. Another superficial implication of love lies in Lady Capulet’s disposition of love through appearance and as a materialistic property. In convincing Juliet to marry Paris, she speaks favourably of ‘young Paris’ face’ and finds ‘delight writ there with beauty’s pen’. She wishes for Juliet to marry Paris solely for his looks since her believe of love reaps from appearance and is without regards to emotion. When speaking to Juliet about ‘(liking) of Paris’ love’, she declares that ‘by having him’, Juliet ‘shall share all that he doth possess’ and derive possession from marriage. Lady Capulet implies that marriage will secure material possession and benefits for Juliet, like ‘that in gold clasps locks in…
