You think hockey headshots aren’t bad? Tell that to the family of Russian forward Dmitri Uchaykin who died after receiving a hit to the head during a KVL game. My stance is clear, stop headshots in hockey.…
A healthy heart is essential for a hockey slap shot. Hockey is mostly thought of as an anaerobic sport/exercise as players play in shifts that can range from 1-2 minutes. For that short amount of time they will exhaust a significant amount of energy that could sustain someone for a much longer duration. Performing a slap shot is an explosive movement. The slap shot can be categorized into 3 stages of movement - Preparation, Windup, and Follow Through/Impact. Consequently the intense nature of the movement causes an increase in your heart rate particularly at the follow through/ impact which is when the player actually will attempt to take the shot .…
As seconds ticked away, the celebration began in full force(Coffey, 1993).The 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team was the best hockey team of all time. They were the best hockey team because of their new coach, conditioning, winning games, and their win against the Soviet Union.…

I was a figure skater for eight years. These years consisted of an abundance of improvements and cheers, up until my sixth year. One day at practice, I confidently attempted an axel I landed numerous times before. I remember taking off, and the next moment I was on the ice with a sore bottom. I shook it off and went for the jump again. Strangely, I fell again.…
I’ve always have worn Ridell brand skates when on the rink. They are the best out of vanillas, hard-candy, and sure-grip skates. The all don’t hold up quite as well as ridell. While everyone is on the sidelines trying to fix my skates, I’m out there speed skating to my music enjoying life.…
It has to take incredible courage to process a challenge like losing a limb in war. Stories abound from young men and women who stepped on a mine, or were ambushed, and their vehicle blown-up. For some, the moment is frozen in time and they cannot shed it. For others, they don't remember anything before waking up in the hospital without all their parts. To take in that realization, and then go on to perform as a star athlete is to this author, unimaginable. The incredible strength and perseverance to go on with life and then for some, to further demonstrate their zeal for life in their high level of participation in sports, is mind blowing.…
The hockey stick was introduced in the early 1800s. The first stick was created of wood with a flat blade. In the 1920s, hockey players began to tape their sticks to increase the hold and strengthen the blade. The banana curve or the bend in the blade which we see today was developed during the phase between the years 1957-1980. A certain player named Bobby Hull broke a stick at a practice and began to play around with the “bent” stick and found to his amazement that there was far more accuracy in his shots (1).…

I am currently on a synchronized ice skating team called The Ice Formetts. In our group we have a team caption, a coach, two line leaders and-now-overall twenty-four skaters. Our team caption focuses on expressive leadership. She tries to keep us all content and working together as a team. Our coach on the other hand, comes up with our programs and can be rather harsh. She does not care if she hurts our feeling, she just cares about the goal-which is to win at competitions. She uses instrumental leadership and we all highly respect her form of leadership. Our coach has charismatic authority and holds the most power on our team. While our coach is very important each of us holds a very important piece of our group. If one of us gets hurt or…

I was six years old when my father strapped me into my first pair of skis, “Skiing is way more fun than snowboarding. Snowboarding isn’t even a real sport,” he jokingly told me while putting on his own skis. Little did my father know I would later become a snowboarder at the age of twelve, following the example of my mother and two brothers. During my junior year at age sixteen, I joined the brand new snowboarding club at Blackfoot High School. Although the club only functioned for a year, I realized that small, northern towns like Blackfoot Idaho were full of winter sport fanatics. This thought brought a question to my mind; are there schools in the U.S. that have snowboarding as an actual high school sport? After more research on the subject, I found that only a few private boarding schools around the country offer snowboarding as an actual school sport. Public high schools usually include sports that require physical exertion, competition and a way to generate revenue like football, basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball and much more, so I asked myself; why not snowboarding?…
I started figure skating when I was 8 years old. I went to a birthday party at an ice rink, and signed up for skating shortly after. More advanced skaters filled the middle of the rink, doing spins and jumps. I fell in love the sport. I like how it was good for both summer and the winter. The feeling of you gliding around the ice in fun-filled strokes was amazing. My classes were amusing and I loved learning new things.…

“Eleven seconds, now you've got ten seconds, the countdown is going on right now! Five seconds left in the game. Do you believe in Miracles?! YES!!! These words spoken by commentators Ken Dryden and Al Michaels, are perhaps the most famous words ever said in United States sports history. The Miracle on Ice, as it has been named, was perhaps the most phenomenal underdog win to ever occur. Perhaps I am biased on this subject because of the game of hockey and it's importance in my life, but to me this is the most thrilling and special occurrence in sports history.…
