I am happy to come to West Berlin and see how the Chancellor is doing with the democracy. The strongest thing you can say today is, “Ich bin ein Berliner!” When you say this, say it with pride because that means you are helping this communist infected democracy work. Some people same that it is okay to have a communist world. Let them come to Berlin. People say that even though communism is wrong, it still helps with economy. Let them come to Berlin. In Europe they say that they can work with the Communists. Let them come to berlin.
Even though your fellow countrymen are across the Atlantic Ocean, it does not mean they are not with you. They are supporting you all the way. Even though the wall is an ugly reminder of how the communist system failed, for all the world can see. The mayor says it is an offense to history and to many families who were separated in the process.
Real peace in Europe will never be attained if some Germans are denied free rights. In 18 years of peace, Germans earn the right to free rights. So, don’t give up, be ready for when the day comes that Germany is united and every man is free.
Critique: I think that the speech was largely influencial to the Germans, who at the time were scared and needed hope. The main persuasion in the speech was Pathos. JFK used much repetition to get the message across and to let the people have pride in their country. For example, he kept repeating, “Let them come to berlin.” Saying that even know they were going through a rough spot, let other people come and see how well they are doing. So that would evoke pride in what they are doing and give motivation. He gave an allusion to the saying “civis Romanus sum” which means, “I am a Roman.” When back in the B.C. it was thought that if you ever left Rome you would never to be hurt. Because everyone knew that Rome’s government was strong and swift and would take care of you for hurting their citizen. In which giving hope to the German people
