Discuss the term iconoclasm and give me several examples of where this has occurred in art.
Answer:
The term iconoclasm is defined as the act of destroying religious images or opposing their veneration. During the seventh and eighth century, it was said that Christians destroyed devotional images to idolatry. This type of destruction appeared in many different forms of art such as the Medieval Europeans destroying many ancient monuments, Aztec, Mayan, and Incan art burned, and German Nazis destroying ancient Byzantine religious monuments. Though the iconoclasm has been seen since early seventh century, today it seems to still be practiced such as with the Taliban's destroying the stone Buddha in 2001. I believe that with some of the art that was destroyed threw out these centuries I feel it benefited us in a way allowing new art to be displayed in its place. Though most people would not agree with how art is destroyed, art is to me not meant to last forever. Art I feel is about performances and rituals. I believe when an artist expresses their religious beliefs in their art it becomes a controversy because most people would not agree with certain religious beliefs which leads to iconoclasm.

Navajo attitudes about beauty, art, and permanence are expressed in the form that pieces are not meant to last forever, there more so there because the artist wants the viewers to experience it’s dynamic of it. I feel the artist is trying to portray an image that as humans were not meant to exist forever because we evenutally die. With his work he is using elements that are
