I have come across many physical therapy consults in the ICU for patients with a grave prognosis. My role as a physical therapist is to find out what is my patient rehabilitation priority. Sometimes a patient might say, “I want to be able to walk to my recliner.” Or I want my wife to know how to exercise my legs.” These goals are enough for me to keep the patient for ICU rehabilitation but for “very minimal intensity mobilization” with patient-centered intervention.
Barawid, Covarrubias, Tribuzio, and Liao (2015, p. 34) pointed out the goal of rehabilitation in palliative/hospice care is not to cure or defeat the disease but to enrich the patient’s quality
