Ida B. Wells was a courageous woman. She stood up for what she believed in regardless of the dangers she faced. She wrote about lynching and why it was wrong. She used her writing skills to bring attention to it in the United States and in England. She said there was no point to have government if you couldn’t get a fair trial. She had to move due to all the threats against her but she kept speaking her mind. It was 30 years before she could return.
Immigrants came to the United States in the nineteenth century
for many reasons. Many immigrants came to the United States because they believed it to be the “land of opportunity”. They wanted a new start on life. They were seeking a better quality of life than they left behind. Some did achieve their dream by working hard and not giving up. Others found it just as bad as what they left.
Many immigrants came to get away from the overcrowded cities in Europe. They were seeking work and trying to avoid hunger. Europe was facing a famine which caused crops to fail. This caused food shortages. Many of these people moved to the Western United States for the open land. The Homestead Act was very helpful to them to achieve their goals. They got land and were free to use it as they pleased. Other immigrants came for religious freedom. They were trying to avoid persecution in their country of origin.
Immigrants faced multiple difficulties. One of the biggest ones was a language barrier. They did not know how to speak English so it made communication difficult. Children were taught English in the free public schools. They faced overcrowded cities. They lived in apartments called “tenements”. Sometimes multiple families shared one bathroom. They faced prejudice and discrimination. English immigrants feared they would take their jobs. Immigrants were disliked because of their race and religion. Other issues included low income and crime. Some were taken advantage of by other wealthy business owners.
Immigrants may have faced difficulties but they continued to come because they wanted to find freedom. They believed in the nation’s founding ideals of all men are created equal. They came for the opportunities and worked hard to achieve their dreams.
