Identifying and Diagnosing Antisocial personality disorder/ Psychopathy The clinical term for sociopathy and psychopathy is antisocial personality disorder. There are many diagnostic terms to identify the antisocial personality disorder and there are many different levels of the deficit of the disorder. According to Black (2015) antisocial personality disorder has been reported in about two to four percent of men and around one percent in women (Black, 2015).The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM) classifies antisocial personality disorder under four major criteria. First, according to the DSM-V, the individual must have shown “disregard or violation of the rights of others…the failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors, deceitfulness, impulsivity or failure to plan ahead, irritability or aggressiveness, reckless regard for safety of self or others, constant irresponsibility, and lack of remorse” (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Dr. Eric Hickey (2009) proposes that the major component that psychopaths have in the need to be in control and studied psychopaths within the American Prison system. He splits them into three categories the major definer between the groups being intelligence level. Hickey (2009) that a Sociopath is more like the typical antisocial personality disorder. These people tend to be of average or below-average intelligence and are common through the state person system. Psychopaths fit more towards Hare’s PCL-R and tend to be of average or above-average intelligence. Hare’s PCL-R is a psychopath assessment tool used by many forensic psychologists to determine if a person exhibits traits of being a psychopath. They have an easier time in controlling their issues and tend to have a harder time getting caught when participating in criminal activity (Hickey, 2009).
