According to Understanding Global Issues (UGI), advanced telecommunications and transportation systems have made the planet shrink and weakened the barriers between different nations (UGI, 2008). Meanwhile, Eastern culture has gained opportunities to communicate with Western culture, which has triggered mutual integration and transformation between these cultures. Culture globalization has had a wide influence on many aspects of modern China. One significant effect of this is individualism which has been brought to China by the West. This spread of individualism is a topic of controversy in China. Although a considerable amount of prejudice and fear surrounds the notion, it has made a contribution to the liberation of personality, especially in China’s younger generation. In this essay the plight of individualism in China will be argued in the first part; then, the second part will focus on the negative effect of individualism on Chinese certain groups, such as the older generation; finally, in order to identify the effect of individualism in practice, this essay will critically evaluate the dramatic changes of China’s younger generation.
Since “many Chinese people would like to consider themselves as collectivists and have been proud of this great tradition (Cao, 2009:42)”, it is challenging for individualists to obtain a high degree of social acceptance in China during the process of cultural globalization.
