What is an Identity Crisis?
Identity crisis is a situation in which an individual feels misplaced in terms of their personal appearance as well as importance of existence. Such people are always confused as to why they are in this world and what role they should play. Generally the problem of identity crisis is restricted to teenagers but as the kids blossom into successful individuals, this crisis leaves their personality. But studies have revealed that identity crisis problem recur and can come up any time in adulthood when they face difficult changing times and problematic conditions disturb life. Who put forth the Theory of Identity Crisis?
The term identity crisis did not evolve suddenly or because of one sole person. Years of research by different psychologists led to this invention. Erik Erikson was the first psychologist though to clearly state its meaning and implications. According to him, whenever an individual loses sense or feeling attached to personal similarity or historical continuity, he is affected by identity crisis. This crisis does not cover the subject of individual identity or national identity. Rather, every one of us has certain individual traits which at times are peculiar and unique and describes the essence of our personality as an individual. Suppose a person visits a new land or country he has to cooperate and behave according to the status quo of that region. In such situations a person can face the problem of identity crisis.
