There is no mention of her parents in the novel and that could have contributed to why should wanted more validation and wanted to know that she was cared for or that she was important too.
She develops into a young girl whose only dream is to be white (pg. 135) and consequently feels out of place when she is around people who are of the same race as her. (pg. 168). From that she develops other habits; some of which she does not notice about herself such as respecting white people more, being more forgiving towards them, hating people who are black.
Fikile develops to a point where she is much clearer about her past and is able to explain it. On page 138 a different Fikile can be seen. From the girl in the beginning of her story who is submissive she has become confident enough to stand up for herself
Throughout part two, Fikile shows signs of growth and maturity as she starts to dissect her identity and explore the things that people consider to be one’s identinty.
