Introduction: IDEO, arguably the most successful design firm in the world, has been specializing in product design and innovations for over 20 years. IDEO, formed in 1991 with a merger of three design companies with David Kelly as the CEO, brought together the capabilities to offer the design, development and manufacturing of new products for client companies under one umbrella. IDEO soon emerged as a leader in “concurrent engineering design”, mixing art and engineering to produce technically innovative products. With a diversified and impressive list of clients ranging from Apple, AT&T, Amtrak and Hollywood, IDEO established a niche for itself by developing products ranging from a computer’s mouse, ski goggles, medical instruments, and stand-up tooth paste dispenser to 3Com's Palm V hand-held computer. The Palm V’s market success has sparked mass competition in the hand-held computer industry.
Problem Statement: Dennis Boyle, a senior designer at IDEO, led successfully a team of developers to launch a sleek Palm V to appeal to customer’s emotions for 3Com in Feb 1999. In 1998, Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky, the management team behind the success of “Razor” or Palm V project formed a start-up “Handspring” to create less expensive, user-friendly palm-size computers. The management team wanted to launch its first product “Visor” similar in design to Razor but wanted to keep the offering costs low to appeal to a wider population before the holiday shopping season in 1999. Dennis Boyle from IDEO was asked to lead the project. Handspring's management wants the Visor prototype to be designed and manufactured in less than half the time it took to design the Palm V. Also as IDEO is still on the Palm V project, Boyle and his team has to keep the details of the project a secret which is in contradiction to IDEO’s informal hallway idea bouncing sessions. Most importantly IDEO has to decide now if it should suggest to Handspring's management to increase the
