LH has been teaching in a special education setting for the last 15 years. Until recently, she was primarily a pull-out (basic skills) classroom for remedial and supplemental instruction for various middle school students. This year, LH is in a self-contained classroom setting with four 5th grade students. These students all perform below grade level (beginning of Third grade) and fall along the Autism Spectrum. She sends home weekly reports for parents to view, e-mails with parents when necessary, implements speech and motor skill plans in the classroom and completes bi-weekly progress reports for the Child Study Team. These bi-weekly performance reports inform the Child Study Team of the skills and concepts that are being taught in the classroom, how well the students are progressing, and what alternative strategies have been used in order to help students achieve their goals. The bi-weekly progress reports are filed and discussed during IEPs meeting, if necessary. At the end of the marking period, the student in LH’s classroom receive an additional report card. This Special Education Report Card is a form that is sent home to parents to provide them with more in depth information about their child’s academic performance. This report card also lists their services and details about their sessions. This report allows parents, teachers and administration to make sure the each child’s IEP is being followed and they are receiving the proper services needed in order to be successful.
Being a Special Education teach is a very important position in a school district. LH doe many important things for all her special learners. She believes that appropriate, constant and adequate communication with all members of a student’s team is essential for student success. She feel passionately about making sure she works well
