If you could spend a day with anyone in the world, past or present, who would you choose and why? RICHMOND UNI ENTRY ESSAY WRITTEN 14/11/12 ON APPICATION TO THE UNI
I have chosen Robert Kennedy the brother of the American President J.F Kennedy for many reasons. Time magazine 5 May 1988 described him as “The Last hero” People spend money to listen to motivational speakers and if I had the chance I would spend the day with Robert Kennedy because I ‘am greatly inspired by his life.
He once said in a speech “Hand in hand with freedom of speech goes the power to be heard, to share in the decisions of government which shape men's lives.” What good is to have freedom of speech and not use it? It is my firm belief that getting a degree will equip me in me in the world we live today, to have a say in what goes on in community and nation. A wise man once said “Knowledge is power” but even though all of us living in the western countries have the freedom of speech few really use it.

Politicians are put in power by the people to represent the people and I believe this was a man who became more than a politician. I would ask him why he really chose to stand up for the marginalised, is it because of his families Irish roots?
His 1966 Day of Affirmation Speech in Cape Town South Africa has been regarded by many sources as the best speech in history. During this time of apartheid in South Africa, Civil Rights in America he had courage to stand up for those that did not have equal rights during that time. Often referred to as ‘the liberator’ O’Connell’s significance is clear; the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act in 1829 enabled Catholic participation in politics and advanced it to no end. Whilst the desire for Catholic emancipation had been prominent since the early 19th century; it wasn’t until O’Connell’s development of the Catholic Association that presented itself as a genuine threat to British rule. The formation of the Catholic Rent in 1824 in response to the quick development of the association raised $20,000 in its first year. This was crucial to the funding of the large public meetings; it was this support that ultimately threatened the British government with approximately 85% of the population being Catholic. O’Connell’s methods also hold considerable significance, as the ‘originator of all basic strategies of Anglo-Irish constitutional relations’ his methods later seen in Collins use of Brinkmanship and in Parnell’s…

John Kennedy came from a rich and privileged Irish-American family. Even so, the family had to leave Boston, the city they are most famously associated with, and moved to New York. In Boston, the family had been held at arms length by those rich families who saw their Irish background as vulgar and the family’s wealth as lacking ‘class’. The Kennedy’s hoped that the more cosmopolitan New York would allow them to access high society. This introduction to bigotry and discrimination should have given Kennedy some kind of empathetic understanding of what life was like for African Americans. However, the opposite would appear to be true.…

It was almost 80 years ago when John F. Kennedy was voted 'Most Likely To Succeed' by Harvard University. The college seemed to see him fit to take that title, and would have kicked themselves later on if they hadn't. Through the 46 short years of his life, he served as a highly esteemed lieutenant for the Navy, funded and urged NASA to become the first space station to send a man on the moon, was a congressman for six years, and became the President of the United States from 1961 until his unfortunate assassination in 1963. His long and productive lineage had formed him into a strong and convincing leader, one who inspired many generations to come in his fight for justice and world peace.…
