If I Was Bird
If I were a bird! As a little bird-maybe a nightingale or an innocent dove-if I were born on this earth, I would have been very happy. As a nightingale, I would be adored by the people for my sweet songs. I would have built my tiny nest on the top branch of a tree.
My nest would give shelter to me and my brethren. From the top of the tree, I could see the greenery of the fields, the flowing rivers and the far horizon. In a storm, my nest would be swung to and fro, without being detached from the tree. I would pass my life, living in that nest in summer, monsoon, or winter.
A free bird I would have been, without any burden of thought or tension like that of the human beings. I would fly to any part of the world, and watch various lands and people and their way of life, their joys and sorrows, their failures and successes.
From high in the sky, I would watch the broad river flowing like a thin stream, and a stream like a line of white thread, and on the railway lines the wagons and compartments like match-boxes, and also the trees and fields jinn reduced sizes, as are drawn on the pages of a picture book. After landing on the ground, I would settle on a tree pear a park in order to watch downward the innocent children playing gaily on the green lawn.
A bird with two strong wings, some day I could fly to a fairy land and see many strange things that I cannot even imagine now. As an aero plane flies to distant lands, or as the migratory birds cross the oceans and mountains every year to reach distant lands to settle their temporarily, I would have also travelled to an unknown land and migrate there for a Couple of months along with other species of birds which are rare in my native land. That would have been, no doubt, a strange experience for me.
As a human being in this birth, I have very little scope to visit distant lands and meet new people and know how do they live and behave. But as a bird, it could be my sweet will to fly easily to any place I liked. My

It kept me company while I was cleaning the house. It would also sing, a lot; John hated singing. I have no idea why he hated it so much; he even hated it when I sang. He told me to get rid of the bird because it was ‘annoying’. I couldn’t give it up that canary was only living thing that I could connect to, but that didn’t matter to John.…

At that moment, the bird began to flutter. It tumbled down through the bleeding tree and landed at our feet with a thud. Its graceful neck jerked twice and then straightened out, and the bird was still. It lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and even death could not mar its beauty.…

Being like my father would be a great thing. Having the knowledge to know what to do in tough times, and how to lead a family. As I look up into space, the trees and houses in my peripheral vision create the illusion of a portal, almost like looking through a big lensed telescope. The “tunnel vision” that was created directed my eyes to a perfectly focused location where I was able to see hundreds of stars, one just as clear as the other. As I look at these stars, I realize that they are galaxies just like this, with planets just like this.…

The poem does talk about two birds and how they are different, but the birds are not used for what they really are. The bird that was flying freely in the sky was used to represent the white people. The bird that was in the cage was used to represent the African American people. They suffered because they were not able to live and do what they wanted to. They were free in the sense that they were not slaves anymore, they could have a job and do other type of activities but White Americans made it harder for them because they were black.…

Jonas immersed himself in the memory. Suddenly, he was sitting down next to a small window. He looked out and upon seeing the clouds he realized he was flying. Below, he could see a long strip of tree tops, skyscrapers, bridges and tiny moving dots. He noticed that all the people around him were sitting orderly, in rows. There was blue carpeting on the floor and white paneling on the ceiling. He was in what seemed like a long and narrow tunnel. “I must be in a plane, Jonas thought.” He had never been inside a plane before, but he had seen some flying over the community. Suddenly, a large thump resonated followed by multiple noises and explosions. People were startled and confused, murmuring to each other.…

It was full of life and flowers and bright. I thought that it would be gloomier. I was okay with it. It made me more happy and it made me feel lifted up. I also realized something. All of a sudden I could hear again. I had no idea why. I thought something was going on here, but I didn't know what. As the other people got off the flight, I followed them. I assumed they were going to look at Stonehenge too. It was a long and strenuous hike. Walking over tons of hills and in between trees. A little bit later all of a sudden there was a wide open grassland. It was something I had never seen before. The rolling hills were covered with green grass that went on for miles. It was beautiful. I was in shock. The small hills were filled with herds of sheep and a few cows scattered here and there. Long in the distance between two hills I saw stones. Although they looked small from far away, I knew they weren't. Everyone gathered their stuff and headed over. Every step of the way I became more excited.…

Colors around me looked as though they had been turned up. Shapes and patterns appeared in the leaves of the trees and in the details of everything around me. I looked back at my friend and she smiled at me knowing I could see what she saw. Our worlds were the same. I was hovering inches above my normal body. Everything, yet nothing was possible. Life was so clear, yet I was more confused than I’d ever been. I was in the state of waking up where you have to remind yourself that it had only been a dream, except I was still uncertain about that.…
