She taught Ifemelu a lot and sometimes in a harsh way, even resorting to hitting her (98). Regardless she became someone Ifemelu relied on. Aunty Uju started as the mistress of a General in Nigeria before he was killed and she felled to America. She faces a great deal of hardships when she comes to America. She is “beat up” so bad by the harshness of America that she becomes a husk of her former self. She begins to view herself as worthless. She even marries a man named Bartholomew who treats her poorly. Luckily for her, she is able to eventually get her life back on track, leave Bartholomew, and continue on with college.
Aunty Uju is successful with her assimilation. She is one of the only characters in the novel that fully assimilates and keeps what she has made for herself. She finishes college and is able to become a doctor. She does not follow Ifemelu back to Nigeria and instead continues to live with Dike, her son. Aunty Uju makes the most sensible choses when it comes to her future. She doesn’t decide to throw away the last 13 years in America in order to return to Nigeria and that is very
