Ikea's Global Sourcing Challenge
1. How should Marianne Barner respond to the invitation for IKEA to have a representative appear on the upcoming broadcast of the German video program?
A. Although Marianne Barner knows that the broadcast of the German video program is aimed at aggressively confronting IKEA and one of its suppliers, in my opinion she should accept the invitation for IKEA to have a representative appear on the video program. Because the IKEA’s philosophy says that anyone can make mistake but he/she should accept the responsibility of making a mistake. The IKEA made mistake unknowingly by accepting the contract without investigating the production facility of the supplier. By having a representative appearing on the video program, IKEA will show that not only the company has guts to accept mistakes it committed but also company cares to rectify it. The representative should first apologize for the ignorance about this issue on company’s behalf and should ensure that the message about company’s planning to take corrective action is clear and how company is going to rectify and avoid such mistakes in future. In this way the IKEA brand value will increase as the customer would know that the company cares for social values.
2. What actions should she take regarding the IKEA supply contract with Rangan Exports?
A. Marianne Barner should first of all understand the situation thoroughly before taking any steps against Rangan Exports. The Global sourcing always brings with it the social, cultural and regulatory differences which should be dealt with effectively to ensure success in global supply chain. She should seek the assistance of UNICEF, ILO and NGO’s and should help Rangan Exports to avoid using child labor in production of rugs by bringing awareness about such social issues and how it impacts the life of child in physical, mental, spiritual, moral, and social terms. She should even pressurize the supplier for avoiding child labor in production. As Rangan Exports was one of the

The use of child labor in some developing countries such as India remains a societal dilemma despite efforts to abolish child labor. Even with laws put in place to stop the practice, the laws were inadequately enforced and prosecution, if any, is rarely harsh. IKEA is faced with the challenge of keeping true to its social responsibility commitment and ensuring that its products are child labor free. This challenge affects their brand image. You must decide whether to discontinue the sourcing of carpets from India and other suppliers that are suspected of child labor exploitation, renew Rangan Exports with IKEA’s own monitoring program, or renew Rangan Exports with the Rugmark program.…

That is why we advise Barner to go to the German television and tell the truth to the world: they assume the fact that Rangan Exports was using child labor. Nevertheless, she has to talk about their unawareness about the fact that Pakistan was not signatories to the Convention 138. Moreover, she should talk about their ignorance regarding all of what happened in the factories because every meeting between IKEA and the supplier was held at the headquarters of Rangan Exports. They never have been visiting the factory, which is the main reason why they…

    1) Marianne Barner, IKEA business area manager for Carpets, should definitely accept the invitation to appear on the upcoming broadcast of the German video program. Indian rugs account for a small part of IKEA`s turnover, maintaining IKEA’s reputation, brand and image is imperative. Thus, Barner must act according to Item 8 of “A Furniture Dealer`s Testament” – “Taking responsibility – A Privilege”. During the video program Miss Barner must admit in calm and cooperative way even when aggressively confronted, that IKEA`s suppliers in India are using child labor. She needs to add that IKEA is currently addressing this issue. As a top manager of IKEA carpet division, she has to explain key points on the case and assure the audience that she personally along with IKEA management will investigate and take appropriate actions to respect and protect above all the lives of the children she had seen in India. As IKEAs vision states: “Creating a better everyday life for the many people”, keeping it in mind and remembering IKEA`s behavioral norm such as “the true IKEA spirit is founded on an willingness to assume responsibility”, Miss Barner is going to up hold these visions.…

IKEA likes to present itself as principled, environmentally conscious, and socially responsible company. Its products that are sourced from others must follow the ‘IKEA WAY’, which is set of regulations for its suppliers around the world. These rules require that manufacturers provide annual report on origin, type of wood used and sourcing of the wood in making the products. In addition, it makes sure labor used in making the products meet the fair trade guidelines set by international regulations. IKEA also follows the UN Convention and guidelines on child labor and if any manufacturer is…

INTRO: So far, this subject has highlighted the necessity to understand cultural differences when conducting business dealings with people from different nationalities. The occurrence of these dealings will only become more and more frequent due to globalisation. IKEA is an example of an organisation that was formed from strict ‘Swedish’ values and beliefs and has used these values in every aspect of the organisations global success. The gist of the IKEA philosophy is ‘to provide customers with trendy functional products with minimalist lines, that are manufactured cost-efficiently with suppliers, and priced low enough so that most people can afford them’ (Harapiak, 2013, p26). My willingness to focus on IKEA in this essay is further supported by my experience (strong friendships) with Swedish students on my Study Exchange in Europe who gave me great insight into Swedish mentality and culture.…
