Tokugawa Ieyasu was the founder and the first shogun of the Tokunawa shogunate. He was able to seize power in Japan in 1600 after the battle of Sekigahara between Tokugawa and the other daimyos that were against him. Although Tokunawa was essentially the ruler at that time with his headquarters in Edo (present-day Tokyo), it wasn’t until 1603 that the imperial court named him shogun. Tokugawa established a national hegemony in which the daimyos were required to pay allegiance in order to continue governing their domains. Tokugawa divided feudal domains to three types of daimyos: Fudai (hereditary daimyos), Tozamo (outside daimyos), and the Shimpan (collateral daimyos directly related to Tokugawa family). William C. Stokoe was born July 21, 1919, in Lancaster, New Hampshire. He had a brother two years younger whose name was Jim. He went to Wells College in 1937 to study physical chemistry. Stokoe then realized that it was too expensive and required massive amounts of time, so he changed his mind. Instead, he attended Cornell University for his undergraduate degree where he received the Boldt Scholarship that helped pay for his tuition. Things were going smoothly, but in 1940 he had a mental break down and was diagnosed as manic-depressive. He took a year off and then returned to college and met a lady named Ruth Palmeter. They eventually got married in November, 1942. Stokoe and his wife helped on the family farm but he eventually went back to graduate school in Cornell University. Stokoe and his wife had a daughter named Helen Marie Stokoe and a son named James Stafford Stokoe. William Stokoe graduated in 1955 from Cornell with a Bachelor's degree and a Doctorate in English. The childhood obesity crisis is an epidemic that not only touches the lives of people in the United States, but it affects the lives of those all around the world. In a society where childhood obesity is a major health care concern, many do not understand the complexity of this issue whereas others just seem to ignore it. Publically it seems to fall at the wayside when it is discussed in conjunction with many of the world’s other problems. So many young children struggle with this problem as the rates of childhood obesity have increased. Childhood obesity can be defined as any child between the ages of 2 through 19 that have exceeded the 95th percentile of the Body Mass Index (BMI) in comparison of those in their peer group. BMI measures height, weight, waist circumference and skinfold to determine the amount of fat a person is storing. Today, nearly one-third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese and face major health concerns in the future (Ogden, Carroll, Curtin, Lamb, & Flegal, 2010). Contributors to the obesity problem are unhealthy eating, derived from a poor diet or eating too much, not enough physical activity, and lack of information on this subject. There is not enough being done to combat this complex issue and measures have not been taken to prevent this from happening in the future. If parents are educated about what childhood obesity is, what causes it, how it causes low self-esteem, why it is such an important topic, what they can do to decrease the risk of this issue, and how this affects their children as they grow into adults, then the number of obese children will decrease in time.…
