The Iliad starts 9 years after the beginning of the Trojan War with the Achaean (Greek) army raiding the town of Chryse and taking two women, Chrysies and Briseis. Agamemnon claims Chrysies and Achilles claims Briseis. Neither however counted the fact that Chrysies’ father, Chryses was a Priest of Apollo. In Homer’s book The Iliad, Homer tells the story of the Trojan War with Achilles, the best Greek warrior. However, Achilles does not like Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, because he took Briseis (Briseis was a woman that Achilles had received as a war prize). This is the reason why Achilles was raged at Agamemnon. In a rage, Achilles wants to kill all of the Trojans, especially Hector, the best Trojan warrior. Patroclus, Achilles’ best friend goes out to the battle field as Achilles (wearing his armor), trying to kill Hector but instead Hector kills Patroclus thinking he has killed Achilles. When Achilles finds out about this, he is very mad and goes out to kill Hector himself. When he kills Hector, he is very arrogant about it. Only after this happens does Achilles get Briseis back from Agamemnon.…

There is a considerable difference between the ideas of the ancient Greeks and Americans now. The author of The Iliad, Homer, tells the readers a great story about two very different, yet very alike, types of heroes. The type of Heroism that is portrayed in The Iliad is extremely different from what the general American public would consider heroic today. The modernized version of The Iliad is the movie Troy, which talks about the same two main characters as The Iliad and gives them many of the same traits as the epic does, but slightly changes some of the circumstances in which they face and how they handle the situations they are put into.…

When a man’s pride is wounded, the idea that he will stop at nothing to restore it, can be seen throughout literature in many different cultures. Through the malicious and extravagant battles exhibited in The Iliad, the idea that vengeance is sought once an individual's pride has been harmed and can only be resolved by combat, is developed.…

The movie Troy (2004) was based on the stories told within the Iliad written 3200 years ago. The story is a tale of one mans greed versus the land loving, pride fighting Troy army. Troy seemed to be outnumbered, but their faith in the gods, and the love of their own country helped them stand up strong against the enormous Greek army. With the kings' son, Hector a great war hero and powerful leader, the Troy army had seemed unbeatable. They were a very advanced and healthy city, protected by giant walls that stretched all around the city, making it nearly impossible for an army of this period to break it down. They were also protected by the Aegean Sea, since there city was located about a mile from the shores. Greece's best chance of attack was by crossing this sea. The Greek's were a loose unity of kingdoms that were all controlled by Agamemnon, a greedy dictator who craved power and land.…

There are many inconsistencies between Iliad and the movie Troy. One of them that stands out is the absence of gods in the film. As we all know, the setting of Iliad is inhabited by gods that interfere directly with humans and there are many instances in Iliad where the gods interacted with the humans. Thetis, the mother of Achilles is the only deity seen in the movie. More important divine occurrences like the Judgment of Paris (the cause of the Trojan War) and the priest killed by Poseidon’s serpents (as seen in The Odyssey) were left out. This major discrepancy itself takes the film away from being a true adaptation of Iliad. A mythological story without the gods is like a play without the supporting characters.…
