J. Richard explains the theory of the market culture. As his definition states, it is “a culture in which laws of the markets economy take place of the principles on which previous cultures had been established” (Richard, 22). Richard compares the market culture with a human based culture to establish a different perspective in how the United States has decided to make its citizen revolve around the thought of money. As he explains, “Violence in many forms come from the market world and is presented as the normal result of progress” (Richard, 34). This market culture has highly influenced immigrants to seek the American Dream because the United States projects prosperity for those who seek to be involved. This has caused the United States to see people as if they were just numbers, and have dehumanized them as the time has progressed. Greed has been be one of the factors that have caused problems within the U.S. Richard uses, “we can state that greed helped racism develop.” (Richard, 126) to explain how people of a high economic status have created racism to people from other races such as African-Americans and Hispanics. These greedy people have been exploiting these illegal immigrants in the United States by paying them at a lower expense. Through my own experiences, I have seen them working in places where they are hired, and are working hard to only receive a five dollar an hour payment. In Miller’s text, she uses, “Unauthorized immigrants who come to the United States each year to work in the agricultural sector, to do back-breaking jobs that U.S. citizens have shown little interest in doing, are subject to exploitation and abuse that no human being should have to endure.” (Miller, 164). Usually these are workers from Latin American countries that are seeking the chance to obtain the American Dream, and then they are faced to exploitation.
