Street racing has been identified as a threat to civil society with significant social and economic impact . Street racing is illegal in Malaysia , as reckless stunts on public roads endanger the lives of many . One of Malaysia ’ s subcultures include the ‘ Mat Rempit ’ biker gangs , estimated to be over 200,000 which comprise of bikers who either take to illegal racing in large numbers or perform extremely dangerous stunts in public displays of bravado . Most of the illegal riders race with small capacity motorcycles and without proper safety measures . Most of their motorcycles are modified for higher speed or to increase the noise emitted by exhaust , which do not meet standard specifications . Many streets , roads , highways and expressways in Kuala Lumpur , Selangor , Penang , Johor Bahru , Kuala Selangor and other cities have become sites for racing . Among the participants are teenagers riding modified motorcycles .

‘ Mat Rempit ’ is a Malaysian term for “ an individual who participates in illegal street racing ” , usually involving underbone motorcycle ( colloquially known as Kapcai ) or scooters . Kapcai was called by some elder people due to they are so familiar with it .
