Illusion of Dress Code
WHY THE ILLUSION OF A DRESS CODE ?
When I left Infosys to pursue my MBA, I was told there’ll be a lot of things that would change. Sure indeed , a lot DID change in my life … the whole ambience of college life brought back a relieving freshness to my life . But I guess there are some things that never change.. certain illusions that never seem to stop haunting you.. like the illusion of a ‘DRESS CODE’.
Now for those who are not aware, Infosys is a company with perhaps the most stringent DRESS CODE policies. Each and every employee needs to be impeccably groomed…nay….dressed in formals. And it is to be followed to the extent that you might miss a meeting , loose a client ,miss a flight , may not be able to reach the doctor or whatever.. but can’t go inside/outside the office even if it’s a small matter like your tie being a bit loose !!
So clearly, I thought leaving Infosys would bring me freedom from the aforementioned autocracy of DRESS CODE. But little did I know, that I was counting my chickens way too soon.. Even in the BSchool , you are expected to be wearing the so called ‘institute formals’ ( which to my horror I realized constituted of not only a formal shirt, a trouser and a tie , but also a hefty BLAZER!!) . And you are expected to wear this crap on.. wait for it.. every day you roam around in the summer visiting companies , every day you sit in an interview , every day your friend sits an interview, every time your institute hosts one out of a galaxy of seminars and events and conferences , every time you have to give a Corporate Finance presentation …and the list is endless. And every time I have to wear it..this one question keeps buzzing in my head.. why this illusion of a dress code?
It’s not that a guy wearing a coat will be able to memorize and recite the whole of Phillip Kotler, solve all numericals in I.M. Pandey and rip apart every other soul in a placement GD. And some other dude, who’s wearing a tee, would not be even able to add 2+2. The

18-3 The dress code used in this scenario was discriminatory. The reason that made it biased was that there were two dress codes for men and women. A dress code that is not discriminatory is one that is same for members of both genders. On the other hand, the motive for the dress code was to distinguish men from women. That act of distinguishing men from women was discriminatory in nature, and it went against the dress code ethics. The motive for distinguishing men from women is not said. Both men and women were doing the same type of job; it, therefore, means that there was no need for distinguishing them. Telling women to wear smocks and men not to wear it was discriminatory in nature. Circumstances that would allow workers to wear different…

For this extra credit assignment I chose to watch an airing of ESPN SportCenter. The issue which I thought to be a major social problem regarding sport that was addressed in this show was the new found dress code implemented into the NBA that all of the players were to follow. This issue would not be considered so highly controversial if it had simply stated that players wear "business casual" attire when entering and leaving the stadium and when they are engaged in team or league business. The problem came when the dress code included no wearing of medallions, headphones, sunglasses (indoors) and other attire and accessories that a vast number of African American players on teams had been wearing since they began playing in the NBA. This is not to say that Whites did not also enjoy these "luxuries" but the majority of players in the NBA who were seen with medallions and headphones on were of African…

How would you feel if you weren’t allowed to express the way you felt at all? Better yet, how would you feel if your education was being disturbed because of your clothes? Many girls all over the United States are taken out of their class to change their clothes because they are “too revealing.” This is something that girls all over the country have to deal with this, but girls at our school also have to deal with it. The dress code at Lincolnview is unfair because the rules are ridiculous, it is unfair/sexist, and students cannot express themselves.…

The purpose of the dress code is to have a better understanding that students do not come here to show off their style, but to come here to learn and get a better education. Students fail to realize the difference between dressing for success and dressing to impress. Dress code is nothing new to our society; many jobs require you to wear certain types of clothing or a uniform. Therefore, these schools are simply preparing their students to have a successful and bright future. Students should be more concerned about what they can learn, not what they can or cannot wear. Education is what motivates student’s people to the top of the platform their wardrobe. “Be careless in your dress if you will, but keep a tidy soul (Twain)”. Students should beware, their future will not depend on…

Do school dress codes unfairly target girls? Are the girl dress codes stricter that guys? These are two questions i ask myself as i walk down the halls of my school. In my opinion and personal experiences, girls are treated unfairly when it comes to dress codes. It is time for the rules to be set straight and set equal to the guys. Girl dress codes limit their wardrobes more than guys. Therefore girls get called out for it more. "I've never seen a boy called out for his attire even though they also break the rules." Over half of public schools have a dress code, which frequently outline gender-specific policies. Girls are also mistreated ad looked at differently in school. While at school girls shouldn't be looked at as a "distraction". They…

All throughout my schooling, I was plagued by a dress code. It felt as if I could not wear anything that I wanted. It seemed like I always was told “Your shorts are too short” or “You aren’t supposed to wear legging without a long shirt” or my personal favorite from teachers was “Your spaghetti straps are inappropriate”. The dress code really used to piss me off for many reasons. For one, I always felt like dress codes were used as a way to punish girls that were curvier than others. Then I felt like the dress code was stupid because it basically told females that we shouldn’t wear certain clothes because it would be distracting to the boys. I mean like what guy is really going to look at my shoulder and think “that’s one sexy shoulder right there”. Regardless of how I personally feel/felt about dress codes, I was set with the task of creating the ideal…

Dress codes are rules that the country has utilized for years. But are these rules necessary? They often suppress students’ individuality as well as students’ self-expression. At the same time these rules also discriminate and needlessly sexualize young women. Dress codes were put in place to establish a distraction-free environment for students. And yet, they are doing the opposite, and thus, modifying or eliminating them would be most logical.…

A student in the United States can never be sure if they will be dress-coded on any day. Enforcing dress codes shows students that how they dress is more important than their education. Students are too often pulled from classrooms and sent to the office to wait for new clothes to be brought from home, or for other teachers to decide…
