In this article there are several examples of how the use of the web, as well other types or media, such as IM, FB and Instagram have changed the way people thinks. One example is a person who says “Texting and IMing my friends gives me a constant feeling of comfort,” a University of Maryland student wrote after being asked to refrain from using electronic media for a day. “When I did not have those two luxuries, I felt quite alone and secluded from my life.” (Greenblatt, 2010)…
Ashley Seidel Professor Kincaid ENG 102 - 1008 24 January 2018 Journal 2 In the article, “I Tweet, Therefor I am: Life in the Hall of Mirrors” by Andrew Lam, he implies that as a society we are reaching the point that the online, digital world is becoming important, or just as important, to the real world. He describes how many are prone to ‘multitasking’ – where they keep “one eye on the electronic (device)… and one eye on reality”. Also, he writes about how many use the digital platform as a way to post anything that comes to mind, making them journalists by some degree. Lam believes that as humans we are starting to believe that we do not fully exist without a type of electronic imprint in the virtual world.…
It is commonly acknowledged that technology is drastically influencing our social behaviors, yet the depths of such influences are still unclear. Many scholars, especially Malcolm Gladwell, cast doubt on this aspect of the question. They believe the impact of technology is insufficient to cause political revolutions. However, I disagree with Gladwell’s opinion that social media cannot push forward revolution. Social media can actually help carry out political and social revolutions, because of the profound influences of technology on people’s behaviors and…
The communication system of the industrial society was based on mass media, largely television, radio and the print press. Such technologies allow for the mass distribution of a one-way message from one-to-many. New forms of social media, such as SMS, blogs, social networking sites, podcasts and wikis, cater to the flow of messages from many-to-many. They have provided alternative mediums for citizen communication and participatory journalism.…
Analytically describing digital technology, he says it has enabled a third and broader category of media. Apart form one-way public (broadcast) media like movies and two-way private (communication) media such as the telephone, civilization now has two-way media operating from private- to public- scale. The author insightfully describes digital as bridging broadcast media and communication media, enabling public to private information movement and vice-versa. Shirley then describes the new media as involving significant economic change. Because no one owns the Internet infrastructure, the Internet is just a set of agreements that bound data movement. With its contents easily accessible to all and the costs low, the Internet has enabled much social and creative behavior, says the…
As technology has grown to make communication easier and easier, the sheer quantity of media has exploded into the insanely huge network of news options available today. In 1980, nearly 90% of all primetime television watchers were watching the “Big Three” networks of CBS, NBC, and ABC. By 2005, the number had fallen to 32% and is even lower today.1 Long time news agencies like The New York Times and The Atlantic are facing fierce competition from exclusively online media distributors like Buzzfeed and Breitbart. Not to mention the rising amount of people whose primary news sources are noncurated social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit.2 With such a fragmented media landscape, it is now more important than ever for the responsible…
Due to the fact that people are becoming more and more attached to social media rather than interpersonal relationships, they are making themselves vulnerable to online political influence and persuasion. Individuals who live through social media have made themselves dependent on information that is provided to them on their select networks. They also are more likely to trust what they read online rather than what they may hear directly from a political leader first hand. Those who are more likely to generate replies, begin conversations, and distribute information are the main persuaders throughout all media. These persuaders are referred to as “prosumers” which is the combination of producers and consumers. This word choice was chosen because these individuals are supplying user-generated content online while at the same time-consuming information as well. Researchers believe that if these prosumers continue to use social media as they do then they will eventually begin to engage in politics more and more. After a while, these social media prosumers will acknowledge themselves as actual opinion leaders. An online leader is described as someone who is engaging in larger levels of media exposure and tends to hold a greater position in social networks. Opinion leaders indirectly…
