There are many resources in our area that are specifically for First Nation, Metis and Inuit peoples. Many of these are designed to reduce the amount of poverty and marginalization of Aboriginal peoples. Within Aboriginal community programs, many of them address specific
populations such as at-risk youth, children, women, and families. These programs are culturally-appropriate so they better address the needs of the Aboriginal community. There are many resources for people that are already in our community, but not many for people who are arriving from Northern reserves or communities.
With the community resources document that has resulted from this assignment, I will be able to provide the families in my programs with information when they are struggling and need to know where they can turn. I will know where to send them and who to connect them with when they have a specific need. Many of the categories in the assignment are very serious topics, which if brought up to me by a parent or child, would need to be addressed right away. This resource would allow me to give them the information they need immediately because I would have it in my classroom, on hand at all times.
