government and funds. It has been believed that foreigners place a strain on the U.S. taxpayer by filling up prisons. In reality, 2% of native born Americans are imprisoned. On the other hand, less than 0.5% of immigrants are imprisoned. In other words, native born citizens are 5X more likely to be imprisoned than their foreign born counterparts (Greenstone). Additionally, it is believed that immigrants reap the benefits of public services but do not pay taxes. This is far from the truth. “In fact the majority of immigrants, being of prime working age and in-eligible for many public services, tend to contribute more to the public sector than they actually use” (Chomsky). Whether documented or undocumented, immigrants tend to use less public services than the average American. This can be attributed to many things. For documented workers, there is a fear that if they use public services they will be seen as a burden on the economy, and therefore they will be less likely to be granted full citizenship. For undocumented workers, the reasons are different. Undocumented workers are ineligible for public services and fear running the risk of being discovered by government officials (Chomsky). Another problem that adds to the misconception of immigrants not paying taxes is the amount of money they contribute. Documented immigrants do pay taxes just like all other legal workers. However, because immigrants tend to make less money, they have less money to contribute. In terms of percent of income, immigrants pay just as much as their America counterparts. However when looking at the actual dollar amount immigrants contribute to taxes, it is apparent that immigrants contribute less to…

It was a pleasure to attend the lecture titled “The Economic Contribution of Immigration in America” by Dr. Alfonso Morales. As a Latina I am always happy to attend a lecture that is a part of the Latino Heritage Lecture Series. I strongly believe it is important to learn about different cultures, and these lectures are always very informative. For this lecture, I was especially excited to hear Dr. Morales discuss not only the economic contributions of immigration but also the more culturally inclined aspects of immigration. I found that even though his lecture was titled the “economic contributions of immigration”, he strongly emphasized more life enriching aspects like diversity and culture.…

An article written by Steven Malaga, published in the City Journal summer 2006, supports the belief : “unskilled, undocumented workers benefit a handful of industries by getting low cost labor, and the taxpayers foot the bill.” In other words, undocumented workers and their illegal families are a drain on our economy. It is claimed that they send every penny they earn to their country of origin, use public services they are not entitled to, perform menial labor, do not pay taxes and their children abuse the right to public services and education. However, as the pamphlet by Neighborhood center states: “ in fact there is no question as to the importance of the buying power of undocumented immigrants. the real predictor of wage disparity is not whether someone is an immigrant (regardless of status), it is lack of education. Foreign-born entrepreneurs with startups businesses have been behind 25 percent of these businesses in this country. Three quarters of the undocumented immigrants pay payroll taxes and they contribute $7 billion in Social Security funds annually without the ability to collect Social Security. While the majority of the children of undocumented immigrants are born here legally and are eligible to public services and education, their parents for fear of deportation are reluctant to seek assistance. Moreover, the…

Many Americans believe that immigrants are stealing jobs from them, when in reality most Americans do not have the willpower to get a job and the immigrants see an opportunity for a job and take it. By the time the natives apply for the job it is already taken because they were too late. Americans also say that immigrants do not pay their taxes, “According to a report from The Institute on Taxation & Economic Policy (ITEP), they pay a hefty amount of state and local tax, just like other people living in the United States. Collectively, America’s undocumented immigrants pay an estimated $11.64 billion in state and local taxes every year with at least 50 percent of undocumented immigrant households filing tax returns using Individual Tax Identification Numbers”(Forbes). That $11.64 billion dollars that is taken is from sales and excise taxes, property taxes and personal income taxes, Immigrants pay as much taxes as the average American does if not…

Some immigrants are legal and some are not. “According to the Census Bureau, in 2009, the US immigrant population was 38,517,234 which averages 12.5 percent of the total US population” (Batalova, Terrazas, 2012). In the USA xenophobic fears against the alleged "Yellow Peril" led to the implementation of the Page Act of 1875, the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, expanded ten years later by the Geary Act. The Chinese Exclusion Act replaced the Burlingame Treaty ratified in 1868, which encouraged Chinese immigration, provided that "citizens of the United States in China of every religious persuasion and Chinese subjects in the United States shall enjoy entire liberty of conscience and shall be exempt from all disability or persecution on account of their religious faith or worship in either country" and granted certain privileges to citizens of either country residing in the other, withholding, however, the right of naturalization. The Immigration Act of 1917 then created an "Asian Barred Zone" under nativist influence. The Cable Act of 1922 guaranteed independent female citizenship only to women who were married to "alien[s] eligible to naturalization".[5] At the time of the law's passage, Asian aliens were not considered to be racially eligible for U.S. citizenship.[6][7] As such, the Cable Act only partially reversed previous policies, granting independent female citizenship only to women who married non-Asians. The Cable Act effectively revoked the U.S. citizenship of any woman who married an Asian alien. The National Origins Quota of 1924 also included a reference aimed against Japanese citizens, who were ineligible for naturalization and could not either be accepted on U.S. territory. In 1922, a Japanese citizen attempted to demonstrate that the Japanese were members of the "white race", and, as such, eligible for naturalization. This was denied by the Supreme Court in Takao Ozawa v. United States, who judged that Japanese were not members of the "Caucasian race".…

employers who are able to hire them for wages lower than they would have to pay to hire U.S. workers.” (FAIR 1). Many open border supporters accept that fact while rejecting the fact that those same people take American jobs. However, many national organizations have estimated that 8.5 million jobs are taken by illegal immigrants. That number comes from the estimate that 74% of the 11.9 million illegal immigrants work. Because the immigrants will take low wages, it is appealing for employers with lower level job offerings to hire illegal immigrants. For people without a high school degree, or even a college degree, it is near impossible to find un-skilled job offerings. Adding to this, the only taxes illegal immigrants consistently pay are sales taxes because they are charged at the register. Although some taxes are paid, it is estimated that only 50% of illegal immigrants register for property taxes and income taxes. Since the percent of America’s population of illegal immigrants is rising exponentially, the tax loss for the government is going to start making an even bigger…

Many illegal immigrants got into the United States using fraudulent documents they tend to find under the table jobs. Which means they work and their employer gives them cash (tax free money) instead of a check or direct deposit? False documentation can cost the U.S. Government because of all of the identity thief that comes with illegal immigration. They have fraudulent documents such as counterfeit Social Security cards, driver’s licenses, fake “green cards,” and phony birth certificates. Illegal immigrants often receive healthcare benefits, food stamps and housing assistance. Such benefits can be used for Americans that are here legally and really need…
