of this act by verifying employment eligibility by utilizing the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services I-9 form (IRCA, 2008). The I-9 is used regularly to verify the identity and authorization of employment for individuals working in the U.S. The I-9 is completed by verifying a series of documents that represent identify and a legal right to work. Some acceptable forms include passport, birth certificate, and social security or green card. The I-9 must be retained for a specific amount of time, so that it is available for government inspection or review. By meeting the legal requirements businesses can avoid stiff legal penalties, so as an HR manager you must know and adhere to applicable laws relating to employment and immigration standards.
