Thesis: What should the US immigration policy be?
What is it?
In order to argue about the US immigration policy you must know what it really is first. This policy is always developing and adapting to the modern issues that the US faces. “Immigration to the United States is based upon the following principles: the reunification of families, admitting immigrants with skills that are valuable to the U.S. economy, protecting refugees, and promoting diversity (American Immigration Council).” These factors help leaders in the US make decisions about immigration.
Why is it bad? Immigration can have some bad effects on the US. Illegal immigrants in the United States primarily come here because of unbearable living conditions (like inferior jobs/job opportunities, drug use, and violence) in their home countries. “...The number of illegal aliens in the …show more content…

Why is it good? There is a huge stigma that Immigrants will cause a crash in the economy and/or steal all of the Americans jobs, but as of now that is far from the truth. ”Economic theory predictions and the bulk of academic research confirms that wages are unaffected by immigration over the long-term and that the economic effects of immigration are mostly positive for natives and for the overall economy (Wharton).” It is a common misconception that crime rates are rising because of illegal immigration as well, when in fact, “ the number of unauthorized immigrants more than tripled from 3.5 million to 11.2 million.
During the same period, FBI data indicate that the violent crime rate declined 48 percent (Ewing).”
What needs to change? Many citizens of the US think that the government should be taking better control of the illegal immigration issue. But how? “Any immigration bill must have enforceable border-security measures as a key national security element in protecting our country.
