I’m glad that we took a day from our class to go see the speaker Dr. Susan Napier who wrote “The Immortal Sea: The Cultures of Childhood,” in Japanese Animation. Although I have not even heard of this book or anything about this woman, I think it was a good idea to sit in on all the conversations that took place. Many people were very into the conversation, and even though I did listen and pay attention I felt so unconnected to the whole sit in just because I really was unsure of what they were even talking about. One thing I did learn about the sit in was how many kids and adults were truly interested in the speaker and the book. Several people asked many questions

In The Week Ahead the arthur argues that Douglas described making the characters in imitation of life hopeless. The reason why this is a great source for me because it shows how race and being a woman was very hard in trying to live out the american dream. Douglas says “ Both white and black are living imitated lives.” To me he is saying that both black and white are living a life where they are following others. In the imitation of life he describes how Sarah Jane johnson who was biracial but imitated her life as a white woman to be accepted in america. The arthur feels that the only thing that is real in the show is the emotion that the generates feels. The point that the author is making is that the imitation of life was build on characters…

I have always held the belief that Nature v Nurture is not a zero-sum game. To steal a line from T.S. Elliot’s The Hollow Men, I believe humans are born into this world a “shape without form.” That shape, of course, is our nature; the sum of our genetic make-up and natural tendencies based on some combination of predisposition and innate sense of self. The form, then, necessarily reflects our experiences and the way those have restructured our ‘self.’ The nurture of our mind, particularly at a young age, is instrumental in providing depth and context to our natural shape. Both aspects of our ‘self’ are complimentary. Just like we are unable to understand shape without the context of form, we are similarly unable to understand humans without an understanding in the dynamic of both nature and nurture expressed through our behavior, desires, and interactions.…

Children learn to act in accordance to their culture due to what their parents teach them and what they learn in school. Different countries have their own way of cooking, driving and most important, teaching. A child who is in a preschool in America, will not experience the same cultural activities as a child in China or Japan. The video Preschool in Three Cultures Revisited demonstrates how preschools in these three countries teach their students in accordance to their culture. This video also shows different Behaviorism and Constructivism aspects for each school.…

Prior to taking this course, I thought I knew what it meant to be versatile in various cultures. However, in reality, I really did not know as much as I thought I did. Last semester, I took part of the study abroad program to Costa Rica. I embarked on a cultural journey that forever changed my life. I was able to experience and embrace in a new and different culture than my own. I lived in Costa Rica for four months. While living there, I had opportunity to also travel to two other countries in Central America, Nicaragua and Panama. After living in another country for four months, I believed that I was culturally diverse; I believed that I knew what it was like to being cultural, little did I know that there was so much more than to living…
