VISION STATEMENT
 To be recognized as the most pragmatic, influencial and effective international shipping industry association in the world.

Brief History of BIMCO
 Originally known as the Baltic and White Sea Conference began in 1905, with 112 members in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was designed to represent the shipping industry and establish acceptable industry-wide freight weight for the carriage of wood.  BIMCO developed charter parties for the ships and cargoes which were carried by them. Here the first Charter Party, Balton, was used in 1908.

 Due to the extensive growth of the organization, representing various entities for trade, the name was then changed to what it is today, The Baltic and International Maritime Council in 1927. Other parties were added to the council namely P & I, brokers, agents.

Relevance to other Organization
 BIMCO is a shipping association providing a wide range of services to its global membership.  BIMCO promotes fair business practices, Free trade and open access to markets  BIMCO promotes the application of International agreed Regulatory instruments; such as those of the IMO.

Relation with the Jamaican shipping industry
 Shipping is a key facilitator of the world trade, and the performance of this essential sector is completely interdependent with those of the global economy
 BIMCO controls 65% of the worlds tonnage and it has members in more than 120 countries of which Jamaica is included  BIMCO supplies useful shipping information and data for legal and operational inquiries.

 BIMCO serves its members on a regular 24/7  They are fully equiped to provide advice and answers to complex problems via the shipping Association of Jamaica  They supply their members with computerized round the clock on-line service concerning world ports information and costs, holidays and

    The first regulations adopted in 1970 laid down a common structural policy for the fishing industry; the number and size of boats, and regulated the market in fishery products. The six founding Member States of the EEC, including UK, Denmark, Ireland and Norway, established the ‘Equal Access Principle.’ This gave each Member State the equal right to fish in the same waters as other Member States i.e. the North Atlantic, the North Sea and the English Channel. In 1976 Member States agreed to extend their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) rights to marine resources from 12 nautical miles to 200 miles offshore.
