Brief History of BIMCO
Originally known as the Baltic and White Sea Conference began in 1905, with 112 members in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was designed to represent the shipping industry and establish acceptable industry-wide freight weight for the carriage of wood. BIMCO developed charter parties for the ships and cargoes which were carried by them. Here the first Charter Party, Balton, was used in 1908.

Due to the extensive growth of the organization, representing various entities for trade, the name was then changed to what it is today, The Baltic and International Maritime Council in 1927. Other parties were added to the council namely P & I, brokers, agents.

BIMCO is a shipping association providing a wide range of services to its global membership. BIMCO promotes fair business practices, Free trade and open access to markets BIMCO promotes the application of International agreed Regulatory instruments; such as those of the IMO.
