ABSTRACT
The effects of ICT on school: teachers ' and students ' perspectives

Finland
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of information and communication technology (ICT) on school from teachers’ and students’ perspectives.
The focus was on three main subject matters: on ICT use and competence, on teacher and school community, and on learning environment and teaching practices. The study is closely connected to the national educational policy which has aimed strongly at supporting the implementation of ICT in pedagogical practices at all institutional levels. The phenomena were investigated using a mixed methods approach. The qualitative data from three cases studies and the quantitative data from three statistical studies were combined. In this study, mixed methods were used to investigate the complex phenomena from various stakeholders’ points of view, and to support validation by combining different perspectives in order to give a fuller and more complete picture of the phenomena. The data were used in a complementary manner.

    Within my setting, ICT is an opportunity for children to apply and develop their knowledge and capability. With my help, they can research, question accuracy of sites and exchange and share information together and through emails (we also share with a neighbouring school and have class blogs). Children are learning the fundamentals of research and electronic media, with support, guidance and safeguarding programs. They develop ideas using tools to refine work, enhance quality and accuracy, use spell checks and thesaurus. These are just some of the general requirements from National Curriculum 1999, published by QCA. In conversation with my teacher, we noted how technology has changed rapidly. We use ICT in Assembly, Role Play, across the curriculum and taking photos for evidence. Teachers are finding it easier to source programs that make learning more fun. An ICT program, namely, www.educationcity.com, covers Key Stage 1-4, all Curriculum areas, plus a Teacher Zone and is used across our school. We agreed, in the words of Blatchford, that we must provide activities to encourage children to explore the technologically of a variety of ICT tools and encourage them to apply these, for a range of different purposes. (Siraj-Blatchford and Siraj-Blatchford, 2006, p. 2). In line with National Occupational Standards expectations of Teaching Assistants in ICT, this ensures we get basic training to support pupils.     Purpose – The present study aims to draw on operations management and information technology literature to examine the effect of three information technology resources (electronic data interchange (EDI), computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems) and three related quality management capabilities (customer and supplier relations, product and process management, and quality data and workforce management) and their effect on a firm’s quality performance. Design/methodology/approach – Hypotheses derived from the key features of quality management and information technology presented by previous authors are tested using structural equation modeling through field research on a sample of 229 manufacturing companies in Spain. Findings – Findings from this study indicate that there is significant evidence to support the hypothesized model in which information technology resources (EDI, ERP systems, and CAD/CAM systems) have a direct impact on related quality management capabilities (customer and supplier relations, product and process management, and quality data and workforce management) as well as an indirect impact on quality performance mediated through quality management capabilities. Originality/value – The discrepant findings in the literature suggest the need to identify contingencies that may govern the IT-performance relationship. During working hours and in our private lives we are confronted with computers. ICT and technology has had an effect on school and education, we have to agree that computers are un-ignorable now. In education we are faced with a dilemma of incorporating computers and communication possibilities in useful ways. ICT can improve education in many ways when used properly children must learn about computers and how to use them as this will help them greatly in life but also other subjects can be taught this way. In the UK year 2000 there was spending of 34 million pounds to push ICT in education over a four year period involving 28 schools as part of ICT test bed project; furthermore in 2004 a sum of 700 million pounds was invested into ICT in primary schools (Harrison et al, 2002) this is a huge amount the question we must ask is has it made a difference? Most research shows that ICT helps students learn and teachers to teach, however it is not just the fact that it helps educate just by being used. Finding suggests that ICT can improve learning but there are a number of barriers that need to be overcome before it can make a difference in the classroom.
