THE CHALLENGES OF ADOPTING INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL REPORTING SYSTEM IN NIGERIA Anthony O. Garuba Department of Accounting and Finance, Western Delta University, Oghara, and Pat Donwa Department of Accounting, University of Benin, Benin City E-mail: anthonygaruba@yahoo.com Abstract Nigeria is going to adopt International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) from 1st January 2012. Globalization and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has reduced the world to a global village. This has given rise to the continuous integration of the world economy and capital markets which has in turn given rise to increase in the interdependence of international financial markets. As a result of this, there is increased mobility of capital across boundaries of the globe. Therefore, in order to ensure and sustain investors’ confidence in the capital market, the issue of corporate governance has now been brought to the front burner because that is the only way corporate financial reporting can be seen to be transparent. However, to operate in the global financial markets there is the urgent need for a uniform global financial reporting, hence most countries have embraced IFRS either by adoption, adaptation or convergence. It is therefore, the intention of this paper to critically examine the adoption of IFRS, its challenges and to proffer solutions that would ensure seamless transition in Nigeria. Keywords: Investors, international standards, globalization and financial statements.…

IDC GOVERNMENT INSIGHTS OPINION ProveIT case studies provide government end users with assessments of IT solutions. This ProveIT case study focuses on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Faced with nine different general ledger systems designed specifically to conform to accounting rules and not capable of releasing information on agency spending, the USDA is modernizing its financial systems, integrating purchasing and financial management processes, budget, and programs. IDC Government Insights believes that: ● The need today is greater than ever for improved government financial management and systems performance. Governments manage significant assets including large loan portfolios, grants, building portfolios, land, airplanes, linear assets, and citizen benefits. ● Financial managers are the cornerstone of accountability and transparency, relying on systems to provide timely and reliable financial information, and yet today suffer from the effects of poor data quality because data is often managed in multiple locations and multiple systems within agencies. ● Based on recent audit estimates, federal agencies make more than $100 billion in improper payments annually despite an estimated $3 billion a year in federal spending for financial systems and complex development projects that typically take 8–10 years to complete. ● Improving the cost, quality, and performance of financial management operations and systems is a management priority of the current administration, and must be a priority of all federal agencies.…

This activity was observed to be a modified dodge ball game with mats instead of people just dodging and fleeing from the ball. This activity was based on 30 students and two teachers. This activity was a modified dodge ball game out side on the basketball courts; the location is at McManus elementary school. This modified dodge ball game took place around 9:30 a.m. to around 10:00 a.m., so it was about thirty minutes in length and very active. There were two adults to the thirty students, one was the teacher and the other was an aid. These students were in about 5th graders, so there are a lot of control movements here for this activity.…
