Imperfection In Robert Frost's Poem Nothing Gold Can Stay
Imperfection
American Poet, Robert Frost in his beautiful poem, “Nothing Gold can Stay” explains that nothing that is amazing will always continue to be great forever. He develops his message through a series of lines that all have the same meaning. Specifically, Frost uses the surroundings of mother nature to emphasize his point, that all the good and beautiful things in life all fade away at some point. Additionally, in lines three and four “Early leaf’s a flower”, “so an hour.” These two lines are strong in Frost’s poem, it gives meaning by revealing that the leaf’s going to blossom, but vanish with the nick of time. Frost’s purpose is to tell a story; that all things will perish, but good will follow. He illustrates a image in the reader's

To me, the poem appears to be comparing our youthful years as being as valuable as gold. We are to enjoy our time when we are young for it is the "…hardest hue to hold…" on to. It is also saying that our childhood years are very short and feels like "…but only so an hour…" As we grow older, our garden of "…Eden sank to grief…" The beginning of our life will quickly end as "…dawn goes down to day…" So in the end "…nothing gold can stay…" which refers to the end of our innocence. Ever since man was given the gift of emotions; it is said that happiness and joy are necessities for common life. It gives great definition to life, because most of the cherished memories that are held dear by most are memories of great bliss and enjoyment. Yes, these feelings of merriment are what give us our humanity, but like a double-edged sword, bliss and happiness do not last forever. This thought is best portrayed through Robert Frost’s poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” This poem goes to great lengths to emphasize it’s message; that each line of this piece strengthens the idea that bliss, and life itself are truly “golden” with the use of metaphors, but inevitably these feelings fade away.…

Something I consider ‘’gold’’ is my grandpa, because he was always there for me and when I was down he gave me a big hug and helped me through the rough times I had. I lost my grandpa because of an Illness he had, he had a bad illness where he was in the hospital for most of the time and that made me very sad. I tried to hold onto him by spending a lot of time with him and taking care of him, because he liked it when I was there spending time with him. I was unsuccessful because my grandpa passed away, but I think of him everyday and in my heart I know he is here with us even through the rough times. In the poem ‘’Nothing Gold Can Stay’’ by Robert Frost, he states, “ Her hardest hue to hold “ which means you can't hold on to someone or something…

be just another poem about nature. As I started to read this poem, I didn’t think that the poem had underlying meaning; however I found myself pondering hidden meanings within the text. The poem is full of imagery of nature, and it is very easy to follow. The title of the poem is simplistic, yet is a great choice because anything more would not allow the reader to see their own meaning of the poem. While I was reading the poem, one thing that kept coming to my mind was what Frost said about his poetry: “I am not a nature poet.” I remember thinking, if Frost is not a nature poet, then how can he write an entire poem about nature. I came to the conclusion that the importance of the poem wasn’t in the woods, but rather the person that stopped. I think that Frost wrote this poem, and several others, in a way that forced the reader to gather their own personal meaning. Although the nature is very much so prevalent, the nature plays more into the imagery that Frost creates. Many of Frost’s poems seem to be sensory, allowing the reader to experience the emotion first hand. What I found to be the most important aspect of this poem was the poems form. Frost was able to add to the poems feeling, by using Iambic Tetrameter, similar to Iambic pentameter using four feet rather than five. When a poet or author uses any type of Iambic meter, the reader can easily pick up on the rhythm. In this poem, the meter makes the reader feel a sense of urgency, in that the man does not want to get caught looking at these woods. Another great device is the rhyme scheme he employs, which is AABA. This type of rhyming links the lines together to create a sense of cohesion. Probably the most important, and “famous” lines of the poem are the last two: “and miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.” Frost…

One of Frosts most well known poems is “After Apple picking”, Frost uses many symbols to enhance the meaning of the poem. The tones contrast and create a theme of life 's work and the desire for success and meaning. The apple in the poem could be symbolic of be said to be the forbidden fruit from the Garden of Eden. The Garden of Eden was basically the beginning of everything earthly and heavenly, therefore repelling death. In order to understand the poem, we must realize that for something to be dead, it must have been alive before. This may not be the central theme of the poem but Frost 's symbolic use of the apple makes this concept as important. This poem is about life but its focuses are what are in between, the missed life experiences and the regret that the speaker is left with. In an online article, the author states “This is setup by Frost to contrast with the post-shift tone and ultimately reveal the theme” (Newman). This type of contrast shows the readers how important it truly is to make the most of ones life.…

In line 5 of “Nothing Gold Can Stay” it says “Then the leaf subsides to leaf.” When I read the definition of “subsides” there were two definitions that came up. One was “to sink or fall to the bottom” and the other was “to give in”. I believe that both definitions fit into this poem, literally and genuinely. The definition of “giving in” relays to nature running its course and nothing can change that. The seasons will change and the leaf must subside to natures doing. Therefore, changing the leave from gold to green. On a deeper meaning I believe Frost is talking about the circle of life. “Then the leaf subsides to leaf” can be parallel to the meaning of the common expression “we all live to die”. The reason I point this out is because in our lives we are all do to change, and there is no stopping it. We must all “subside” to the circle of life. Change is inevitable, and there isn’t anything we can do to stop it.…

By utilizing and manipulating certain elements in a literary work such as imagery and syntax, an author manages to add emphasis and meaning to his/her work as a whole. These elements if used properly, will both convey the message the author wants to portray in his/her work, while maintaining to keep the attention of their readers. Robert Frost in “Nothing Gold Can Stay” (Frost, "Nothing Gold Can Stay"), and “Meeting and Passing” (Frost, Meeting and Passing) are only two examples of the many literary works that have successfully used imagery and syntax to take full advantage of the opportunities they create in a literary work. Imagery is a key element in both of these short poems that alter the way in which the reader ultimately perceives the work as a whole. Syntax in both of these short poems enhances its meanings and contributes towards its tone. Although these two short poems similarly use both imagery and syntax, they have distinct differences also because these elements are used in different ways to convey different messages.…

During his life, Robert Frost, the icon of American literature, wrote many poems that limned the picturesque American Landscape. His mostly explicated poems “Birches” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” reflect his young manhood in the rural New England. Both of these poems are seemingly straightforward but in reality, they deal with a higher level of complexity and philosophy. Despite the difference in style and message, “Birches” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” are loaded with vivid imagery and symbolism that metaphorically depict the return to the nature and childhood, the struggle between reality and imagination, and also freedom and captivation.…
