Germany, Italy were just united – wanted bigger prestige
Europeans didn’t want a major war inside Europe – “export of tension” to save their capitals – invested money oversees cheap work force available there to find markets for goods no trading unions (no laws on working hours and conditions; workers/natives couldn’t revolt) to civilise natives – e.g. medical care to control over raw material sources (only Japan didn’t have raw mat.) countries needed coaling stations for ships overpopulation – needed new lands; young educated people could get job missionary motive – to spread Christianity
Effects on natives diseases, death population mixture (Africans were brought in) slavery their population dropped (90% died) converted to Christianity some education, schools (but didn’t learn about their own culture) jobs were created health care improved hygiene, sewage system roads, railways were built clean water was more available in Asia nationalism spread

lost independence, controlled by foreigners ⇨ no say in their own government exploited economically – long working hours, low wages they looked down and thought to be stupid

Suppose a stranger your home and demand that from now on you go by their rules and do as they say, most people would consider this absurd and do something about it. This is pretty much the situation that the United States put the citizens of the Philippines in the year of 1898. Imperialistic actions by the United States against the Philippines caused turmoil within the United States because the morals of the country were in question regarding the actions taking place and the beliefs stated in the Declaration of Independence. Anti-Imperialist League did not agree with the United States taking control over Philippine citizens and disregarding the fact that these citizens deserved respect. The Benevolent Assimilation Proclamation established by President McKinley was arguably unjust and impractical. Securing two naval bases to set up a means to develop commerce seems acceptable until it is put up against denying the Filipinos their sovereignty.…

The Colonial Period began with the settled countries of the time wanting to launch voyages to explore 'the new world'. One of the first successes was the Spanish, when they were able to settle in South America as early as 1252. But the biggest exploration of the time by far was set off by Columbus who, in search of the Indies, instead fell upon America, which started mass colonization. Colonization was so popular due to its trade worth and how much it could help the mother country, and with, in many cases, foreigners at the disposal of settlers, it was also no wonder that slavery became so big. The two most popular races that were enslaved included the Native Americans and Africans, and in this paper I will be comparing and contrasting the…

During the late nineteenth century America was a growing and prosperous country. The Civil War had ended and the United States was once again unified. As the United States gained more money and power, it looked to overseas trade to monopolize on their raw materials. The United States began to trade with Japan, China Latin America and other countries to acquire these distant resources. In order to protect these investments, the U.S. had place upon these foreign countries their political influence. The United States went to war with Spain in order to protect their investments. In the Spanish-American War the United States gained control of the Philippians, Cuba, and Puerto Rico all three territories were filled with coveted materials. While many agreed with America becoming an imperialist country, many believed it was against America’s best interest to do so.…

The Opium Wars in China are said to have been caused by a number of factors, none more so than China’s opinion of Britain. Connections between the two countries began through trading and naturally an awareness of the British people came about . However it was shown that China’s imperial government did not see Britain as a power of any significance- which seems to be related to their sense of imperialism; China believed that they ‘did not need to be interested in Britain’ , they had such faith in the power that their country held that Britain need not be heeded. On the other hand, Britain believed in its imperial superiority and looked at the country as ‘past minded,…

Between 1870 and 1900 the continent of Africa and the Africans that inhabited it endured a European imperialist push that ended with the entire African continent, except for the nations of Ethiopia and Liberia under the colonial boot of the European powers. The European nations of Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain carved up the continent between them without regards to the African nations, ethnic, religious and tribal rivalries or even geographical boundaries that had previously existed. The effects of the European powers colonialist policies have had and continue to have ramifications that continue to be felt to this day. An example of the ethnic, religious and tribal complications was the Nigerian Civil War.…
