Implications Of Abstinence-Only Education
One of the implications of abstinence-only sex education is that it is ineffective in its desired outcome and therefore puts young people in danger by not providing them with the appropriate knowledge to practice safe sex. According to an article by the Guttmacher Institute, ““Despite years of evaluation in this area, there is no evidence to date that abstinence-only education delays teen sexual activity” (Guttmacher, 2006). Abstinence-only education can be harmful because it doesn’t curtail sexual activity and it simultaneously neglects the necessary conversations that promote safe sexual encounters. While I believe that comprehensive sex education is the more progressive of the two, both ideologies lead to common consequences such as neglecting

Doan and Williams examine abstinence only sex education in American public schools and how it contributes to the social constrains of women. This novel evaluates what the effects of abstinence only sex education, showing that this from of education doesn’t effectively prevent adolescence from having sex and can increase the risk of unwanted pregnancy. Doan is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Kansas and the chair of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She has also the author of Opposition and Intimidation: The Abortion Wars and Strategies of Political Harassment. Williams is an Associate Professor of Political Science at California Polytechnic State University and has written a novel and many articles on homelessness. Primary sources are analyzed to show the results of abstinence only education compared to comprehensive sex education. This novel contains a lot of information about sex education in USA that is not entirely relevant to the topic of the social construct of virginity and how it affects women in Canada and USA from 2000- 2015; however, the information about gender politics ties in with the construct of virginity and how it generates the use of abstinence only education which can perpetuate sexual disempowerment, distorted power dynamics in relationships, and increased vulnerability to sexual assault is useful information.…

If children and adolescents are educated about sex practices at too young of an age it can encourage them to partake in sexual activities prematurely. This can result in teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and negative mental health or low self-esteem. If students are educated about sex with abstinence based program it can reduce the amount of teen pregnancies that occur. For example, Project IMPPACT in New York City “focuses on the importance of abstaining from sexual intercourse” (Lieberman, Gray, Wier, Fiorention, & Maloney, 2000). This program discovered that “Lower rates of adolescent sexual activity are associated with having parents who demonstrate a combination of traditional attitudes toward sexual behavior and effective communication practices” (Lieberman et al, 2000).…

Sex instruction is critical, however numerous amounts of students complete sex education classes with a mutilated perspective of sexuality and without a decent comprehension of contraception and safe-sex practices. Schools without sex education, leave children confused and often misguided. Students are left to learn through their parents about sex, who could, in turn, be misinformed themselves by never having taken a course in sexual education. Without sexual education classes, little is accomplished leaving a defective and contorted, one-sided point of view of safe sex such as abstinence. The lack of knowledge also can lead to an increase in teen pregnancy, and the spread of sexually transmitted disease, Sexual education should be taught to…

In recent years, the question of whether schools should teach abstinence only programs or comprehensive sex education has been debated rigorously. Through his 2013 published piece, “Educating for Character in the Sexual Domain”, author Thomas Lickona focuses on the benefits of abstinence only programs. He uses the argument that abstinence creates character in today’s youth and cites multiple sources that support his viewpoint. On the other side of the discussion, authors of the article “Abstinence-Only Education and Teen Pregnancy Rates: Why We Need Comprehensive Sex Education in the U.S.”, David Hall and Kathrin Stanger-Hall address the lack of efficiency abstinence only programs provide. Published in 2011, their article relies heavily on…

Comprehensive Sexual Education What has happened to today’s society that we are opposed to condoms because they might entice sex? When has allowing our youth to practice unsafe sex over safe sex been okay? We often think because we supply kids with condoms, birth control, and talks, that we are giving them permission to have sex, when in fact we are merely trying to protect them from STDs and pregnancy. We do not need to scare kids, but we do need to provide them with information about safe sex practices and what can happen if they do plan to explore their sexual urge. Facts are the most important thing we can offer those select few of youth who wish to engage in sex. Since when has providing information been a bad thing? Shouldn’t the youth know what they are doing and what can happen before they do it? Most schools and education environments that do encourage any sort of sexual education, teach kids to “just say no”. The one main problem with this “abstinence only” education is that it denies those who do say “yes” information, instead of providing other acceptable options other than abstinence. Throughout time, ratings have shown that teaching the abstinence only education doesn’t affect the rates at which teenagers decide to have sex. Though comprehensive sex education doesn’t stop kids from having sex, it does however teach them how to participate in safe sex. Teenagers in today’s society are not stupid. When they are told by teachers that abstinence is the only way that they will not get a STD, they know they are being lied to or misled. Giving teenagers’ information about the risks of different types of sexual behavior can help them make informed decisions about sex. The most effective programs are not the ones that try to divert teens from sex completely but rather the ones that try to steer teens away from dangerous sexual behaviors. Most teens who do not have the correct information on risky sexual behaviors veer away from vaginal intercourse, and…

Teen pregnancy rates throughout the nation are very high, and many people are trying to figure out how to cut theses rates down. Teaching abstinence or sex education in school has been a major issue throughout the United States for years. Many high schools teach abstinence- only in an attempt to lower the teenage pregnancy rates throughout the country. Many people believe sex education is what needs to be taught in high schools so teenagers are not going in blind and wind up pregnant. “Studies show that sex education reduces the likeliness for teen pregnancy by 50 percent.” Are either of these programs the most effective ways to prevent teenage pregnancy and unsafe sex? The government is funding both types of educations…

My learning throughout this course was different than other courses. I read from a textbook, which was similar, but the application was different. Seeing as this is a foundations of education course, it was about the history of education for most of the course and how the history shapes the present, and will shape the future of education. The application was a lot different, however, due to the fact that the information learned throughout the course applied to different projects. For example, while gathering information for the debate on abstinence-only education in schools, it was important to take into account what life was like, and how our culture has evolved into one where sex is not a taboo topic anymore. With that in mind, having abstinence-only education made sense for students of a different time, but the information provided to students needs to change with the times. This is different due to the fact that for other courses, the projects would include information on current topics instead of cumulative information.…

Over the years the questions of whether sex education should be allowed has dwindled to a very small percentage of people that say no. The bigger question is what exactly should be taught. The few different methods of sex education is a abstinence, abstinence-plus, and responsible decisions. Abstinence has been the most taught method for a ling time, but it has been proven to not be very effective. Abstinence plus is a newer method and is becoming more popular. Instead of just that the students should stay abstinent, abstinence-plus also teaches about different methods of contraceptives and how they are used effectively and it teaches about Sexually Transmitted Diseases, along with HIV and AIDs. Brigid McKeon and SunHerald.com limit themselves to just abstinence and or abstinence-plus, where as the NPA goes even further with a third method. The third method of sex education is responsible decisions. Responsible decisions focuses on teaching teens how to make responsible decisions about sex. Some people think that only one method should be taught, where as others feel…

In 2005, nearly half of all high school students have had sexual intercourse. Plainly stating that abstinence programs do not work (USA Today). Abstinence programs were beneficial many years ago, but since they are ineffective in delaying teen pregnancy, then teen pregnancy rate has increased. Abstinence programs teach the “no sex until marriage” clause, but they don’t teach teens about birth control and the consequences of having sex at before they’ve matured. Although many studies argue that abstinence programs are educational and beneficial, other studies will show that they don’t delay teen sex, they don’t prevent the spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), and are a waste of taxpayers’ money. The birth rate has increased by over 50% and increasing every day. Television and the Internet are filled with sex and teens are exposed to it on a daily basis.…

How would it feel to be pregnant? I will never have the chance to find out, thank God, but apparently about 13% of the female students at Timken High School in Canton, Ohio know how carrying a baby feels. The spread of this epidemic must be halted now before many other aspiring students have their dreams dashed by the responsibility of parenthood. Through stronger parental guidance and support, better abstinence programs, and more government action, this urgent problem must be quelled and brought under control by any means necessary.…

Within the last couple of years, the number of high school teenagers who have had sexual intercourse has raised dramatically. Most people would make the connection of the child’s behavior to their parents, but in reality it is much more than the parenting. Schools are also connected to the sexual activity when they teach health classes. But should schools be teaching abstinence or should they be teaching more? Well, if we want there to be less teen pregnancies and high school dropouts then we should be more aggressive when enforcing sexual education in schools.…

The article implies that the sexual education curriculum should include lessons on “abstinence, purity, resisting sexual pressure and avoiding high-risk situations” (Fraga, 2011). In my opinion, preaching to students about the importance of abstinence and forcing them to believe that sex before marriage is sinful, is absolutely absurd. We cannot stop children from being curious and wanting to explore because it is a natural human behaviour. Telling our children to simply abstain without giving further information about sex will only increase their curiosity; this is human nature and it is normal behaviour. Therefore, abstinence-only programs are rendered ineffective and even inaccurate because they exclude the discussion of important sex ed topics such as contraceptive methods. As specified by researchers, 80% of the abstinence only curriculum contained false data on the effectiveness of contraceptive methods as well as religious beliefs which were tried to be viewed as scientific facts (Kendall, 2013). Nevertheless, author Brian Fraga claims that “educators also have a responsibility to ensure that teenagers who are choosing to have sex understand the potential consequences of their actions and know how to keep themselves safe”. Although I disagree with his initial statement claiming that abstinence plays a major role in the curriculum, I strongly agree that teachers are responsible for teaching at least the basics of sexual education as it is crucial for children to know about and thus practice safe sex. According to Vaughn, moral norms should be impartial and should apply to everyone equally no matter their religion or beliefs (2). And since education is a prime source of knowledge, it would help children make judicious choices about what is right and what is…

Not all Americans can agree on what sex education course is best and when it should be taught. The problems are over the issues of abstinence. Less than one fourth of Americans polled said that schools should only teach abstinence from being sexually active. That group also believes that absolutely no information on how to get condoms or any other types of contraception’s. Almost half of Americans polled said that abstinence plus knowledge of concentrations and condoms are needed. They feel like not being sexually active is the best but they know many teens do not abstain. A third of American in the same poll said that sex education should focus on being able to teach good decision-making…
