Importance of Family- Personal Essay
The Importance of Family
Families are a basic foundation in all human communities around the world. Healthy individuals within these healthy families are at the centre of a healthy society. It is therefore in everyone’s best interest to help create a positive environment for all families. The family unit has changed over the years but its importance is still quite relevant. Both success and failures are faced with much more love and intensity when you have a family unit to fall back on. Family is the staple foundation in one’s life that instills a foundation of socialization, shape one’s true identity, and helps overcome life challenges. Socialization plays a key and vital role in a child’s everyday life. Children interact and are influenced by peers, the media, school, religion, and the government. A child's main unit of socialization is their family. A family influences a child positively and negatively in many different ways including: by the way they teach the child, by the value they place on education and the family activities they choose. During socialization, a child learns the language of the culture they are born into as well as the roles they are to play in life. For instance, girls learn how to be daughters, sisters, friends, wives, and mothers. Without socialization a child may become afraid of the real world -afraid of talking to peers or parents, afraid to take initiative, and afraid to move on with his or her own life. Socialization is key in building a child’s personality, emotions and helps them develop into a mature adult. Without socialization, one may feel confused or may not know one’s true identity. Another factor one may gain by having a supportive family is the realization of one’s self identity. Self-identity is the way you look at yourself and your relationship to the world. Understanding this allows you to examine who you are and more importantly create who you want to be. Oscar Wilde, an Irish author/playwright once

Attempting to understand family life can be done through many different perspectives. The most central theory in the study of family sciences is the Family Systems Theory. The perspective of Family Systems Theory can be summarized through the phrase “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. Family Systems Theory attempts to understand the series of connections between the individual parts of a family and how these interactions and connections affect the family as a whole. A family system is made up of the connections between individuals in a family. Family systems interactions with outside systems determine the openness and permeability of the boundaries surrounding a family system. The goals of a family system affect the behaviors and patterns that become the family structure. Subsystems within the family interact with each other and affect the relationships between individuals. Of course family units are not static and therefore the rules, traditions, and day-to-day behavior of a family system must constantly be changing in order to keep the course of reaching their goals in equilibrium. Family systems are united in their desire to achieve goals formed from a [unified] family paradigm or ideal. In this paper I will use family systems theory to interpret how my own family goals motivate the structures and processes that make up our family system. Family Systems Theory allows me to understand my family’s processes as working towards the family goals to have fun, create togetherness, work together towards accomplishment, and be spiritually strong.…

A family should have a strong bond with each other because they are blood –related and should be able to work together in making the most of life. Families should be able to communicate freely with each other in order to solve conflict or just have someone they can talk with. Families are the people who stick by each other’s sides in tough situation and should support each other even if someone does not agree with what is going on. Families should be able to express themselves to each other without feeling ashamed of what they believe in. Each family has an important impact on the rest of the family and the children involved. “The family operates as an interrelated and interdependent unit; therefore, events and experiences that have an impact on a particular family member also will have effect the other members of the family or the entire family unit (Minuchin, 1974).” (Gargiulo & Kilgo,…

Through family we find ourselves as give and receive support. Family brings out the best and the worst in each of us. As we yield to and serve others we learn to love them and ourselves in the process, many of us could never approach this form of selflessness in any other way. There is something about a mother or father, a son or a daughter connection there that blinds us and asks more of us then we are normally willing to give. When we are true to ourselves and follow our feelings and share openly and honestly with our loved ones we remember why family is important. And we are well rewarded for our sacrifice as it enables us to better appreciate who we are. On the other hand, when we yield to our selfishness and take our family members for granted or treat them poorly we lose our sense of self-worth and begin to despise those whom we once loved.…
