One of the main points ,or the thesis as you could call it, is that Georgia became a colony in a very different manner than its predecessors. It is shown that Georgia had many influences from not only the British West Indies, but also from its neighboring colonies of the Carolina’s, but Pressly wants to convey that Georgia had many other influences and became a prosperous new colony on its own. This does make him somewhat bias against other ideas of how Georgia came to be. However, Georgia was influenced by many and became a very unique and different colony than those that came before it.…
State government in Georgia operates in accordance with the 10th and current state Constitution of Georgia (see separate handout “A Brief Constitutional History of Georgia”). Georgia government is carried out through three branches - executive, legislative and judicial. The executive branch is headed by the governor who is elected by the people every four years. Governors in Georgia are limited by the state Constitution to no more than two consecutive terms. The Governor of Georgia is considered moderately powerful when compared to governors of other states. Candidates for governor must be at least 30 years old upon assuming office, must have been a U.S. citizen for 15 years and a resident of Georgia…
Georgia was used as a military buffer that would provide protection to South Carolina from the Spanish. This was deemed necessary after the Spanish had threatened Charleston on multiple occasions. In order to provide success for the colony, Oglethorpe tried to keep the colony under better rule than in England. Alcoholism was a problem for the urban poor in England, thus leading…
The charter by King George II to give Georgia to James Edward Oglethorpe was used as a means to lower the population of England by transferring the Poor Subjects of Misfortune but yet those who want employment to Georgia. King George II would pay the way of the Poor Subjects of Misfortune provided they agreed to occupy and work the 50 acres of land provided to them and their family upon arrival to Georgia. This would give England a stronghold between Carolina and the Spanish occupied Florida. After seeing how the Carolina’s use of slavery over took the general population of Carolina, King Georgia II and James Oglethorpe agreed that no slaves would be allowed in Georgia. This would provide a strength to the other 12 colonies in that the Poor Subjects would be willing to fight for the King and protect Georgia as their new home. As a loving father would, the trustees felt that by guaranteeing the transfer of land to only the eldest son would be protection from further poverty and stop any temptation for the…
Captured in 1778 Georgia was the only colony conquered by britain. America later became allies with France who sent 47 ships bringing 5,000 soldiers and 500 Haitians to help. The two new allies linked up and ordered the british to surrender the city. The british general received 24 hours to decide. The british then had 800 more soldiers sent to Georgia to then begin a battle. The battle went horribly for the colonies. 700 allies died trying to stand their ground and keep the flag standing. The british kept savannah for 3 more years after the Siege of Savannah.…
James Oglethorpe can be considered a humanitarian because of the reason we wanted to start the 13th colony for, the reasons that he gave the king, and his beliefs. The main reason was because his friend Robert Castell died in debtor’s prison due to miserable living conditions. He wanted to give charity to the “worthy poor” another chance to pay their debts instead going to the dreadful debtor’s prisons. Additionally, Oglethorpe had an opposition of black slavery, and he even banned blacks from entering the colony to prevent this from happening. Not possessing slaves was also one of the three major regulations in the colony of Georgia.…

First of all, economic circumstances were very different between the north and the south. The north gradually had become an economy revolving around manufacturing and commerce; they focused more on the city life. Unlike the north, the south was more agricultural, and their economic production was stemmed from plantations. The majority of the south was rural, while the north was more urban. The south depended on the export of the raw materials that they cultivated and imported of manufactured goods from England. The north was unhappy with the south’s dependency on England because it was inhibiting their prosperity, as the south did not supply them with raw materials to manufacture on their own. Northerners wanted to purchase the raw cotton from the south and turn it into finished goods, that way they could sell the manufactures products. Because of this, the north wanted to raise taxes on European goods to that it would prevent southern plantation owners from working with England, and instead, buying the north’s manufactured goods. However, the south disagreed with this, and wanted to lower taxes on goods that came from England.…

While Abraham Lincoln was not a supporter of slavery, he was also not against it during the beginning of his presidency. Lincoln believed that the government should not terminate slavery in places where it was already occurring. While his main intention was to grant all men freedom, he was responsible for whether or not he could save union. Although Lincoln was not focused on abolishing or protecting slavery, later on he did use his powers to end slavery. Slaves were the main reason why the Confederacy had structures and food. Since they built the structures and grew the food for them. Lincoln came to the conclusion that he could approve the army to free slaves, since he had the control of ordering the Union army to take the Confederate supplies.…
Most of the state constitutions in the South accepted the use of slaves because it benefited their economy and their agricultural needs. The North thought of slavery as an immoral tradition and suggested that the South band the use of slaves and conform to the “free labor” system of the North. The Southern states didn’t want to abide by the Northern states because under the Southern states constitutions, slavery was permitted. Also, the Southern states mentality was far different from the North. White farmers in the South thought themselves furrier to African-Blacks and therefore should be their own boss rather then be equal to slaves. The whole issue of slavery wasn’t that much concern for some of the people in the Union, anyways. The Northern people thought that slavery would eventually die out and the South would then be forced to adopt the North’s economic system. The North’s only concern about the South was that they would use their own ideas of “Manifest Destiny” and try to spread slavery into the new territories. When the North tried to prevent this from happening, the South got infuriated and that was the first step towards…
In the later 1700's to 1863, slavery was an intricate part of the South. Slaves were needed for plantation work like planting, caring for, and harvesting crops to maintaining the land. After Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, more slaves were needed to keep up with the increased cotton production. In the South their belief was African-Americans were property. On the other hand, the North's economy was based on industry and manufacturing powered by European immigrants. They believed slavery was wrong and inhumane and African-Americans are just as human as everybody else. These two different views are one of the major reasons that led to the Civil War.…
