Leadership: How to Lead, How to Live

Few things are more important to human activity than leadership. Effective leadership helps our nation through times of peril. It makes a business organization successful. It enables a not-for-profit organization to fulfill its mission. The effective leadership of parents enables children to grow strong and healthy and become productive adults. The absence of leadership is equally dramatic in its effects. Without leadership, organizations move too slowly, stagnate, and lose their way. Much of the literature about organizations stresses decision-making and implies that if decision-making is timely, complete, and correct, then things will go well. Yet a decision by itself changes nothing. After a decision is made, an organization faces the problem of implementation—how to get things done in a timely and effective way. Problems of implementation are really issues about how leaders influence behavior, change the course of events, and overcome resistance. Leadership is crucial in implementing decisions successfully. Each of us recognizes the importance of leadership when we vote for our political leaders. We realize that it matters who is in office, so we participate in a contest, an election, to choose the best candidate. Investors recognize the importance of business leadership when they say that a good leader can make a success of a weak business plan, but that a poor leader can ruin even the best plan.

A leader must be able to move quickly from one agenda to another. A leader must be able to inspire a person or a group of people to want to do their best. A definition of leadership can be, “A relationship through which one person influences the behavior of other people” ( Mullins, p. 904 ). One of the biggest problems that a leader in any organization has to deal with is change. Leaders have to be versatile and willing to make tough decisions in today’s economic climate. Successful organizations need leaders at every level, whether be CEO of a Fortune 500 company, coach of a NFL team, or manager of a local supermarket. Effective leadership builds confidence amongst the participants of an organization, in addition to acting as the catalyst for the aspects of the organization to work in tandem. Fortunately, being a leader does not require a certain title or degree. Leadership is an “attitude, not a position” (Grant et al. IHI, 2017). A leader is one who “creates conditions that enable and encourage others to achieve a shared goal through collective action” (Bohmer, 2013). Therefore, everyone can be a leader in a distinct way.…

As a young adult, I feel that leadership is one of the keys to a bright and successful future. One of my personal cherished quotes on leadership is, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader,” by John Quincy Adams. When I read this as a middle schooler, I then decided that it would be one of my enduring goals to excel as a leader. I used to feel apprehension towards challenges, but now I recognize that they only make me work assiduously for a finer outcome. I strive to be a leader in inspiring others to dream, learn, and to be someone that makes even a diminutive difference in this world.…

The basic principle of leadership traits is something that separates the Marine Corps from not only other branches of the military but also every other organization in the world. The stress for every Marine to have the ability to be a leader and to take charge and do what they know is right allows the leadership to trust that everything that is supposed to be done will be done and done correctly without issue while the leadership can focus on more pressing issues. Furthermore it allows the Marines not yet in positions of power to be ready for when they are given responsibility. It also means that when Marines are met with a situation in which they do not have any leadership above them the Marine will have the ability to make good decisions and resolve any issues that they may encounter. Three of the most important leadership traits of the fourteen are initiative, dependability, and judgment.…

Leaders are like shepherds who guide their flocks (the employees) on the right track keep them away from any harm or treat. Leaders who truly care for their followers expose them to the painful reality of their condition and demand that they fashion a response. Instead of giving people false assurance that their best is good enough, leaders insists that people surpass themselves. Adaptive work is required when our deeply held beliefs are challenged, when the values that made us successful become less relevant, and when legitimate yet competing perspectives emerge.Getting people to do adaptive work is the mark of leadership in a competitive world. There are six principles for leading adaptive work: “getting on the balcony,” identifying the adaptive challenge, regulating distress, maintaining disciplined attention, giving the work back to people, and protecting voices of leadership from below.…
