Importance Of Real Compass And Straightedge
I believe there is an importance in using a real compass and straightedge. Firstly, writing things down and creating things on paper has a longer lasting effect. Therefore, when one uses a compass and a straightedge to construct, copy, and bisect angles, lines etc., it is more hands on and has a more permanent effect. When one uses these tools, they are able to effectively adjust widths, and lengths. One of the problems with computer automated programs, is that one does not get the hands on effect of adjusting the widths and actually visualizing the process. In other words, one does not achieve the full experience, which is so important to understand in our everyday life. Another problem is that many of these programs automatically program

To create a line segment and copy it, I connected points a and b to create a line segment. Then, I took my compass and placed the tips on points a and b to measure it. I placed my compass on point c and drew another line segment connecting the line to point d and so created my copied line segment. To create the hexagon inscribed in a circle, I created points n and o and drew a circle around them making the two points my radius. Then, I measured points n and o to create point p on the circle and keeping the same measurement I created point q on the circle and repeated this process until I had created points all around the circle (r, s, and t). Finally, I connected the point p to point q then, to point r and so on until I had a hexagon.…

Surveyors often use triangulation to measure distance. Starting at a known location and elevation, surveyors measure a length to create a base line and then use a theodolite to measure an angle to an unknown point from each side of the base line (Jains 30-48). The length of the base line and the two known angles allow a computer or person to determine the location of a third point.. As life continues on and we grow older and more mature, we are able to look back at certain parts of our history and reflect on how these people or places have affected who we are and what we have become. The passage of time and the interactions we have with our world help us to achieve this ability to look back and view how we have grown and changed. In 1998 Ramond Gaita had his reflective memoir published and in this memoir we are told the story of his father and his various relationships with the land and the people he interacted with. Similar to Gaita, Maria Dell’oso has also written a reflective piece that features anecdotes of her family in different time periods and she has shown the change in their sense of belonging over time also.…

The other skill that Vikings excelled at was the skill of navigation. Their longships were the cutting–edge technology at the time, and their ingenious sun-compass, which worked somewhat like a sundial, allowed them to sail to their destination with precision. The longships were usually made with oak boards stripped from trees with thin ropes soaked in pitch trapped between joints to act as a flexible, waterproof membrane. These ships, combined with their streamlines design, are very fast and seaworthy and would flex out of places when a sturdier ship would shatter. The sun compass is also very useful…

The Aztecs developed compasses, squares, plumb levels, and applied geometry for their building and measurement. Not only did they need these instruments for engineering their cities and edifices, but also for precise land measurement for taxation purposes (Landon, 1993, MA29). In contrast, the Omaha used a stake and a rawhide strap to make circles. Other North American native people, the Kwakuitl made right angles and squares with a system of cords and pegs by finding midpoints and doubling. (Landon, 1993, p.…

Throughout the last few years, technology has been improving the lives of people from all walks of life and all fields of study. One of the big pieces of technology in the civil engineering field today is computer aided drafting. AutoCAD is a computer aided design software for the 2D and 3D design of certain objects or places. Computer aided drafting is widely used in the civil engineering field because of its ability to plan sites a lot easier then hand drawings, it can help design a lot of engineering supplies, and is constantly upgrading. Up until a few years ago, civil engineers would hand draw their design plans which could take a while. Computer aided drafting makes this process faster and easier. It can also lay out sites, roads, sidewalks, bridges and other engineering items. There are constant upgrades to computer aided drafting being made every year to improve the system and help civil engineers.…
