The lack of social order brings out the worst in all of humans because of the lack of consequences. The modern age allows many people to find loopholes and exploit them as if there were no consequences. Average people darker shades of themselves that they do not reveal in public. However, when you let them hide behind a mask of anonymity, those shades pop out and take over. In the novel, the Lord of the Flies, William Golding portrays the lack of social order combined with a mask of anonymity people tend to perform cruel and savage acts. In the modern world, there are no limitations. With a mask of anonymity people act with savage and cruel intents. The modern age allows people to hide behind a mask of anonymity of
the internet to exploit others on the web. Furthermore, people tend to attack other weaker individuals whom they consider inferior. In “12-year-old’s Suicide Spotlights Cyber-bullying Threat”, some reporters found quotes used against this girl, the juveniles told the girl that “[she] should die” or “Why don’t you go kill yourself?” This type of behavior shows how people, even younglings, use the internet as a mask to act cruelly against others. In the novel, the Lord of the Flies, William Golding portrays this behavior with a cult of young boys hiding behind painted facemasks as masks of anonymity. While on a hunt, the boys discover a sow feeding its piglets. While killing it, Jack “found the throat and the hot blood spouted over his hands” (Golding135). The passage shows how when behind a painted mask of anonymity, he will revert to uncivilized ways and become a savage. In conclusion, William Golding reminds readers that with a mask of anonymity to hide peoples’ true selves and without proper authority, people will act upon their savage human nature. Without a well-established society, people will act upon their free will and perform harsh and cruel acts. Without genuine consequences, people will exploit that and act on their own free will. Such as juveniles, using quotes such as “You should die. Why don’t you go kill yourself” (Dahler). The quotes used by the juveniles represent how even at the youngest of ages, people will act cruelly towards others.{knocked over sand castle}. Another example of a system without proper social order is when Jack, Sam, and Eric promised they would, “keep the fire going and [they] let it out” (Golding 70). This quote shows how without enforcement of responsibilities, people will not abide by the rules. In summary, it is essential for a functioning society to have social order. Without it, people would not do what they are supposed to do or complete their responsibility. Overall, without proper authority, people tend to hide behind masks of anonymity to act upon their free will and exploit the unestablished system. People, in the absence of social order, will ignore their morals and return to their basic human instinct of survival. Therefore, people require a functioning well-established system to perform as civilized human beings.
