1. The nurse may face a language barrier that could hinder her performance. In the United States we use a lot of slang and there are different meanings for some of the same words. Struggling with a language barrier can be very difficult for a foreign nurse because they may feel lost when trying to converse with patients. Huston (2014) discusses that some of these differences could include expectations of the nurse, scope of practice, legal environment, accountability, professional autonomy, health care technology, and relationships between staff members. If a nurse does not have the full concept of the nursing practice here in American he or she cannot give quality care to patients. My plan of action to ensure that a new foreign nurse understands the nursing process is by incorporating a training session before the preceptor program even begins. This educational course would cover communication skills, documentation, and the expectations/policies of the health care facility. Coming to a new country and working under an unfamiliar set of rules would be completely overwhelming to a nurse. This is why the hospital and staff must do everything possible to make the nurse feel at home and help them cope with all of the new changes. By implementing a training session before the nurses preceptorship it would help the nurse understand what is expected of him or her and the areas they may need to work on to give excellent quality
