Grice’s four maxims are, if not rules, but way of means to allow us to say things indirectly in order to avoid discomfort when saying uncomfortable things or to imply something without having to actually take a direct stand or viewpoint. By strictly following the maxims, the conversation in question is pretty straight forward and it is not hard to find the implicature. On the other hand, when one flouts one is more indirect and therefore generates an implicature.…

My mind started to change when my middle daughter attended preschool at 4 years old. She was in a dual language classroom (Spanish and English). She had only been exposed to English, until the first day of school. By the end of the year, she had acquired Spanish so well, that when others heard her speak, they would ask me why she had an accent. She knew her colors, alphabet, and was able to carry on a simple conversation in Spanish. My husband and I were blown away. We could not believe her growth not only in Spanish, but English as well. Her current elementary school does not offer this dual language program, so now that she is in 2nd grade, she has lost all the Spanish she acquired three short years…

Nowadays, all people say that English is the most essential and easiest language that people could use to communicate in different countries. As I read thoroughly the two articles, which are called “ English seen as a Co-star among Global Language” and “Can English be Dethroned”, I’ve found out that people more commonly accept using English as a second language in the 21st century. We all understand the fact that English has been growing in popularity largely as economic globalization is getting bigger. The benefits of English as a common language for communication and interaction far outweigh any possible disadvantages that it might have. English is a global language not because the world shows respect to it by accepting it as a global language because it has the characteristics of a global language.…

Introducing a new language to a child at a young age will help the child acquire information easily and memorize the language. According to The Associated Press, 66 percent of the world’s children are raised bilingual. Nationwide, bilingualism has become a necessity. The United States continues to grow, increasing its population and adapting more diverse cultures. In 1968, a law was established to support the needs of bilingual education, known as the Bilingual Education Act. The federal government granted more funding to schools to provide developmental programs, staff training, and program maintenance. Introducing a second language to students who are native in English should begin lessons during toddler or kindergarten years of school. Developing the skills of learning a second language is not useful if students are not practicing those skills on a daily basis. It is imperative that parents support their children while learning another language. It would be useful for parents to learn the same language as their children because it provides more opportunities for students to have someone to practice with at home. In the essay “Aria,” Rodriguez states Supporters of “bilingual education today imply that students like me miss a great deal by not being taught in their family's language.” Having the ability to speak a second language in and outside the home is beneficial for students who seek acceptance from peers. Learning another language can assist students with academic…

The age group which is most sensitive to this issue is children. Children come to our world as blank sheets and different agents write things on it. At the early stages of growing, children carefully observe things around them, and everything they face play a very important role in shaping their personality and way of thinking. Thus, we might not want to introduce them to different cultures, languages and values until their own ones are already established. ?Children must initially begin their schooling in their own tongue, with which they are familiar. This will help their cognitive development and inculcate critical thinking?. (Zubeida 2012). Zubeida stated that it is really inconvenient to start teaching English at the early ages. He insists that it should be introduced to a child at a late stage, and it should be taught as a second language. However, it is still believed that it is preferable to start language learning earlier, because the input becomes much…
