Paul had felt like that war was similar to the sickness. I feel like death from war is like sickness because no one knows whether they are going to die or not. When the recruits join war, they never know if they will survive or not. They are there to protect their country. Once the recruits join war, they are willing to die for their country. This is similar for diseases because you won’t know if they will die or not. War and diseases are similar because people would keep dying until the war stops or when people are immune to the diseases. Most people would die in both cases which is why they are so similar. I believe that they will most likely die whether they are in war or they have a bad disease.
“I have a big orchard with cherry trees at home. When they are in blossom, from the hay loft they look like one single sheet, so white. It is the time.” (276) Detering started to pick the blossom because I believe that it reminded him of home. Detering must have been homesick because he must have missed seeing the blossoms bloom. I feel like that he couldn’t take the war anymore because he misses home. When Detering saw the cherry blossoms, it was a sign that he missed home and that he should go home. Since he decided to go home, he was willing to risk his life getting caught. He didn’t care at this point because he still had a chance of dying if he still stayed to fight for the war. I don’t think that this was the best choice for Detering because he would still live a little longer being safe if he didn’t try to go back home. I believe that he would now never get to be free anymore since he was already
