Their attempt to express their artistic talents in the light of what was current, instead of what was considered the norm, did not sit well with judges of the French Salon, who were trained to meticulously judge arts strictly according to compliance with classical arts. As the judges consistently rejected their products at state salon
exhibitions, on the excuse that their products did not look concluded but looked like memory impressions to be finished later, they (Impressionists) pooled together and established their own exhibition, in order to show-case and sell their works.
“Couture, Romans Decadence” depicts an artist's disappointment and indictment of the French Government for the corruption and deviation from the tenets of classicism, that arts should be instructive, morally right and not frivolously after pleasure. “Courbet, Burial at Ornans” is an example of an artist expressing his artistic talent in the light of the order of the day. I agree with the Impressionists because posterity invariably looks at every era's strengths and weaknesses, in order to learn and avoid pit falls.
